About This Cause

Our Heritage: Help, Hope, Healing. This is what goes on every day on the Windwood Farm Home for Children 110-acre residential campus along the Wando River in Awendaw. South Carolina. Boys, age 6 to 16, have access to several ponds, nature and fitness trails, an obstacle and challenge course, and an on-campus education center. Highly skilled staff lead trauma and recreational therapy programs using best practice, evidenced based, therapeutic interventions. It all adds up to a nationally accredited treatment program that offers each young boy a chance to elevate himself beyond his wildest expectations. At Windwood Farm Home for Children, we help boys like Jack. It’s hard to read Jack’s story without wanting to cry. Jack was born with drugs in his system. Those same drugs made his mother do horrible things to her young son. When Jack cried or misbehaved, she bit him until he bled. That was her way of punishing him. The abuse got so bad that relatives stepped in and took Jack to live with them. They were hopeful as they watched Jack’s mom slowly get her life back together and eventually regain custody. But it didn’t last. She soon slipped back into old habits and the abuse returned. To Jack, the abuse wasn’t as devastating as the decision his mother made next. When he turned 10, Jack’s mom permanently gave up her rights to custody. He was alone…until he came to Windwood a few months ago. Thanks to support from people like you, there’s a place for boys like Jack when they need it the most. Every day at Windwood, Jack works with his therapist. He asks questions like, “Why don’t I have parents who love me no matter what?” But the question that haunts him the most, says his therapist, is why his mother abandoned him. Jack’s past makes him prone to outbursts. He is destructive to property…and to himself. But his Windwood counselor also sees glimmers of hope. He’s getting better at managing his emotions. He’s making friends and learning to be part of the Windwood family. Jack’s life will probably always be marked by the trauma of his early years. But he is hopeful that one day soon he’ll find an adoptive family. That happens a lot at Windwood. Boys find the healing they need and then become part of a new loving family or return to their own. Your support makes it possible. Windwood works for entire families, not just boys. When you hear Windwood, many people think of the farm and the boys’ campus. But that’s only half of the story. Because families need help too. Windwood Family Services offers full-service counseling that helps parents and children through life’s toughest challenges. Windwood’s master-level clinicians help children and families in the Windwood outpatient clinic and in their homes to help resolve issues before DSS takes custody.. Because of Windwood Family Services, more than 5,000 children have been able to stay with their families, instead of in foster homes, over the past decade. With your support, that number will grow. We have the tools. We just need more resources.
