Mission Statement

OUR MISSION: To provide a continuum of services for victims of domestic violence and their children and to eliminate cultural acceptance of domestic violence through a coordinated community response, prevention and education. OUR VISION: To influence a culture where all people are safe and valued in their relationships. Safe Harbor is a private, 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence in the upstate of South Carolina. We offer a continuum of services, providing safe emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, and transitional housing, as well as community outreach and teen dating violence education in Greenville, Pickens, Anderson, and Oconee counties. Together,we make a difference for victims of domestic violence and their children, providing them with safety and resources, helping them to heal, and giving them the support they need to start new lives.

About This Cause

Safe Harbor was founded in July 1995, though our shelter services have existed as a grassroots effort since 1978 when a small group of concerned locals opened a home in Greenville to a handful of women needing safety. It was the first such shelter in South Carolina. Safe Harbor now serves Greenville, Anderson, Oconee and Pickens Counties, and since 1995, we have expanded to operate three 24-hour shelter facilities with a total bed capacity of 70. In 2014, we sheltered 616 women and children in these facilities. In addition to shelter services, we also provide:  Community Counseling (counseling for victims not in shelter) – served 163 in 2014  Legal Advocacy – served 146 in 2014  Transitional Housing – served 39 in 2014 Safe Harbor provides safe shelter and comprehensive support services for domestic violence victims in our local community. Our services are specific for domestic violence victims and are available 24/7. Our provision of shelter includes thorough safety measures for the protection of the victims residing there. Safe Harbor can house up to 70 individuals in our three shelters (located in Greenville County, Anderson County and Oconee County), and in 2014, we sheltered 614 local women and children. A victim who stays at Safe Harbor is in a position of fear: If she were to leave her relationship, she has reason to believe her abuser would look for her with the intention of harming her (or her children). The overall goal of our program is to provide victims with shelter that is secure, safe and comfortable; food; clothing; and other emergency needs. Safe Harbor’s ability to satisfy immediate needs alleviates the fear and anxiety a victim faces when she is forced into a position of homelessness because she chooses to flee a violent partner. In addition to emergency basic needs, we also provide support services including counseling, case management, safety planning and advocacy for victims. Because of the special circumstances for which our residents are seeking shelter, our clinical staff works intensely with them to help develop their independence and self-sustainability. In addition to our shelter program, we also have 15 units of transitional housing available. For non-residential clients we offer confidential, professional counseling, and legal advocacy (support in filing for an Order of Protection). Safe Harbor’s dating violence curriculum, The Megan Project, began in 1998 after a Mauldin High School student was killed by her boyfriend. In 2010, the program was rebranded/renamed REP (Relationship Education Project) and was expanded to include a more comprehensive version of once-per-week classes throughout a semester. The program is now referred to REP1, REP5, or REP8, depending on the curriculum length being provided (REP5 = 5 sessions). In 2014, Safe Harbor’s team of three educators reached more than 6,000 students. Safe Harbor is the only organization providing direct domestic violence intervention and prevention programs in Greenville, Anderson and Oconee Counties.
