Mission Statement
The Children's Recovery Center is a multidisciplinary child advocacy center. Our mission is to provide forensic interviews, medical exams and advocacy for children who are suspected victims of sexual and physical abuse.
About This Cause
The Children’s Recovery Center is the only agency in Horry and Georgetown Counties who provides this service. Prior to the establishment of the Center, law enforcement had to travel to Charleston, SC or Columbia, SC with children who were referred for services. The Center began providing services for Horry and Georgetown Counties in March of 1996, and has been located in the city of Myrtle Beach since 2004. In 1996 we saw 46 children and in 2024 we saw 400 children. The Children's Recovery Center is a non-profit community organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our clients consist of children ranging from infants to 18 years old who may be victims of physical and/or sexual assault. All services are completely free of charge to the victim and their caretakers. The Children's Recovery Center brings together the community professionals with the child and the family in a child-friendly atmosphere. The goal is to establish the best course of action, through multi-disciplinary team efforts, to advocate for and to provide treatment for the child. The Children's Recovery Center helps to alleviate the anxiety the child may experience during the examination, investigative process, and possible legal system involvement. In addition, ongoing counseling and advocacy are provided at no cost to the victims or their families. Reaching out in our community by providing education, safety and awareness programs is a large part of what we do. Our staff regularly trains and educates on recognizing abuse and the prevention of abuse to, law enforcement agencies, social services, schools and other community organizations at their request. The impact of child abuse in a community like ours can be felt long after an abuse incident or incidents occur, if a child does not get help. Abused children are 25% more likely to experience teen pregnancy. Children who experience child abuse and neglect are 59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to be arrested as an adult, and 30% more likely to commit violent crimes.
