Mission Statement
This charity was established in 2004 by Professor Tonghai Yang at UW-Madison to help poor kids in China to continue their very basic education. 100 percent of your donation goes to the needy students with all overhead covered by volunteers. It is tax deductible. Currently, we support about 1400 poor students a year (up from original 200+ a year at the beginning) and it will continue to grow organically. We don't give up on students as long as they don't give up on themselves. A little support makes a real difference and inspires the kids to do better and to be kinder. A little support and care gives them more confidence on themselves and their future. Most poor kids who are now in college become involved in volunteering work themselves. Some started to give back.
About This Cause
This charity was established in 2004 by Professor Tonghai Yang at UW-Madison to help poor kids in China to continue their very basic education. 100 percent of your donation goes to the needy students with all overhead covered by volunteers. It is tax deductible. We support more than 700 students a year now and it will continue to grow organically. We don't give up on students as long as they don't give up on themselves. A little support makes a real difference and inspires the kids to do better and to be kinder. A little support and care gives them more confidence on themselves and their future. Most poor kids who are now in college become involved in volunteering work themselves. Some started to give back. The program in China is run purely by volunteers, mostly teachers themselves and with help of college students. They check on students at their homes, via phones, and friends. Dr. Yang goes back every summer to check on some students. The following link (and links there) gives you some glimpse of the charity via photos: http://hometowneducation.org/photos19-1.html Although it originated in Dr. Yang's hometown, Ningguo, Anhui, China. It has now extended to five counties in 4 provinces, thanks to the effort of local volunteers and generous donation of donors in US and China. We hope to continue to grow and expand gradually as support and trust becomes bigger. There are two kind of donations, general and sponsorship. If you like personal connection with some specific students or would like your kids to know a little about poor kids' life in China, sponsorship is a very good way to go. Based on your preference, Prof. Yang will choose some candidates for you to sponsor. Every year, the student(s) is asked to write one letter to you (together with his transcript), and you are more than welcome to have more direct communication with the student(s). This kind of communication makes a lot more difference and inspiration to the poor kids and people around them. Sometime, a simple description of simple things in your life (or your kids) gives a lot of imagination to them. For example, when I was a kid in my village (long time ago), I had no idea about bike, TV, or electricity, and thus no dream either about this kind of stuff. Some letters from them are very moving and inspiring. Here is the link for some of the letters: http://hometowneducation.org/letters.html Please check on www.hometowneducation.org for more information. You can make your donation online (above) using Paypal, or send your donation to HEF to Hometown Education Foundation c/o Tonghai Yang 9 W. Geneva Cir. Madison, WI 53717 If you have any questions, please contact me (Prof. Yang) at thyang63@gmail.com or (608)770-3229. Please be assured that all your donation goes to the needy students 100 percent! It is tax deductible. Please let your friends know about this program and encourage them to support us too. Word of mouth is very important to us. Together we do make a difference.
