Mission Statement
ProCon.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity. Our purpose is to provide resources for critical thinking and to educate without bias. We research issues that are controversial and important, and we present them in a balanced, comprehensive, straightforward, transparent, and primarily pro-con format at no charge.
About This Cause
ProCon.org is a website that provides pros and cons of important social issues so people can read both sides and make their own opinions. We’ve been around for 15 years, and we cover hundreds of issues in great depth including gun control, marijuana, the death penalty, immigration, felon voting, and social media. Our website was used by over 23 million people in 2018 and by more than 180 million since our start in 2004. Our public charity exists to promote critical thinking, education, and informed citizenship. We use critical thinking when deciding which route to take to work, which tomato to buy, which movie to rent. But when it comes to making decisions about the most important issues in our society, who to vote for president, whether or not to support gay marriage, animal testing, abortion, medical marijuana and others, our critical thinking often flies out the window. Most people don’t have the time, skill, or interest in gathering all the research to make an informed decision. At ProCon.org we have made it our business to professionally conduct the research, interview the experts, fact check and vet the information, compile the research onto our free website, and ultimately to stimulate critical thinking by presenting opposing perspectives side by side in a pro and con format. The research takes our staff weeks and months to compile for just one topic and all the data is sourced so people can see exactly who said what, where, and when. Getting multiple perspectives on an issue in our unbiased format is an excellent method for developing critical thinking. In 2018, we asked teachers who use ProCon.org whether or not our website helps their students with critical thinking. 98.9% said yes, and 99.7% of them said they would recommend ProCon.org to other educators. We have had educators from more than 11,000 schools in all 50 states and 90 countries use ProCon.org. 50% of them are high school teachers and librarians, and the other 50% is split between elementary, middle, and college/university educators.
