Mission Statement
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Pee Dee Area is a youth development organization, providing children and teens (age 6-18) programs in education, life skills, character development, and healthy lifestyles every day after school, on non-school days, and all summer. Our mission is "to inspire and enable all young people from throughout the Pee Dee Area, especially those who need us most, to become productive, responsible, and caring citizens."
About This Cause
Chartered in 1964 by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Pee Dee Area (BGCPDA) has grown from one Club to six, and now serves 3,000+ young people ages 6-18. Our mission is "TO INSPIRE AND ENABLE ALL CHILDREN THROUGHOUT THE PEE DEE AREA, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO NEED US MOST, TO BECOME PRODUCTIVE, RESPONSIBLE, AND CARING CITIZENS." Our membership represents 75 public schools and 34 Zip Codes in the Pee Dee Area of South Carolina. More than 685 youth are served daily at our Clubs in Florence, Hartsville, Hemingway, Lake City, Pamplico, and Timmonsville. In terms of those who need us most, 86% of Club members live below the poverty line, 72% live in single-parent households, and 91% are served by no other youth organization. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Pee Dee Area provides diverse after-school and summer activities that meet both the interests and needs of our members and their families. Programs help young people become engaged with adults, peers and family members in activities that build their self-esteem and encourage them to develop important life skills. To ensure that all of our members have great futures, the Boys & Girls Club has adopted a "Formula for Impact," a research-based theory of change that describes how we can increase our impact on our young people. We begin by providing the most influential programs possible, using "Five Key Elements for Positive Youth Development," (a safe, positive environment; fun; supportive relationships; opportunities and expectations; and recognition), offering high-yield activities and providing targeted programs, all of which help youth achieve our priority outcomes of ACADEMIC SUCCESS, GOOD CHARACTER & CITIZENSHIP, and HEALTHY LIFESTYLES. Because research has also shown that attending the Club more often and over a longer time makes young people more likely to achieve positive outcomes, we also focus on increasing attendance, program participation & member retention. Club programs fall into five major areas: * EDUCATION & CAREER: programs for educational enhancement and career exploration * CHARACTER & LEADERSHIP: programs fostering leadership, responsibility, and decision-making * HEALTH & LIFE SKILLS: programs to encourage healthy, active lifestyles. * THE ARTS: initiatives to enhance creativity and skills in visual, performing, and literary arts. * SPORTS, FITNESS & RECREATION: activities to promote fitness and positive use of leisure time. Since our founding, BGCPDA has provided youth with programs that help them become responsible citizens and tomorrow's leaders. By using the YOUTH DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY created by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, all programs strive to instill in members * A SENSE OF COMPETENCE: the feeling there is something every boy & girl can do well; * A SENSE OF USEFULNESS: the opportunity to do something of value for other people; * A SENSE OF BELONGING: a setting where children know they have a place & where they "fit" and are accepted; * A SENSE OF INFLUENCE: a chance to be heard & to influence decisions. Through our programming and caring adult professionals, we see results. According to teacher and parent surveys, * 86% of members who needed to improve academic performance, did so; * 80% of those who needed to improve their behavior, did so; and * 96% of parents report their children care more about learning since joining the Club.
