Mission Statement

The Atlanta Opera’s mission is to break the boundaries of opera to create exceptional experiences for audiences everywhere.

About This Cause

Founded in 1979, The Atlanta Opera celebrates the art of opera in Atlanta, Georgia, continuing a long tradition of community dedication to the ultimate musical form. Reflecting the vitality and innovative spirit of our city, The Atlanta Opera has evolved into a cultural powerhouse. Under the leadership of internationally recognized stage director and Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. General & Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun since 2014, The Atlanta Opera presents four mainstage productions at Cobb Energy Centre and two innovative Discoveries operas creatively offered in venues throughout metro Atlanta. If success is rooted in quality—staging world-class productions of timeless classics and cutting-edge stories from modern history—our growth is rooted in courage. One of the few companies operating during the 2020 pandemic lockdown, The Atlanta Opera presented a full season in “The Big Tent Series,” performing under a circus tent in outdoor settings, fully compliant with health and safety protocols. The crisis also launched The Atlanta Opera Film Studio, resulting in the production and international distribution of livestream opera performances and cinematic operas that meet the film industry’s highest standards. Distribution of the films and a library of entertaining bonus materials have expanded the reach and impact of The Atlanta Opera internationally. The Atlanta Opera’s education and engagement activities reach students and adults throughout Georgia and the Southeast with an ever-growing impact. In addition, the 96-Hour Opera Project and Festival advances the industry by creating opportunities for under-recognized composers and librettists to advance their careers in opera. The Studio Artists program is making an impact by training the rising generation of artists. With every production that originates with The Atlanta Opera, we expand our business by leasing sets, scenery, costumes, projections, and custom properties to companies across the country making Atlanta a national hub for opera. The first original Ring cycle produced in the U.S. since the pandemic was launched in 2024 draws the world to Atlanta making this a destination for opera. With the recent success of a comprehensive funding campaign and the launch of the 45th Season, The Atlanta Opera celebrates achieving a place among the top 10 opera companies in the United States—joining Chicago, Houston, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles, among others. Quality, Vitality, Creativity, Diversity, Courage—The Atlanta Opera is in sync with our city.
