Mission Statement
We create, perform, teach and promote dance as an essential and inspiring element of our community.
About This Cause
Founded in 1984, Nashville Ballet (NB), a nonprofit arts organization, has experienced major transformation since inception. Once a dance troupe of six dancers, NB has grown to become a regional ballet company, school, and community educator. In 1986 the company presented its first professionally produced ballet, just two years after being formalized as a company. In FY17, NB presents its 31st season on stage. From the start, Nashville leaders and a grassroots movement believed that Nashville needed its own company and has ensured this foundation each year for more than three decades. School of Nashville Ballet was begun early on to teach local students and to ensure that Nashville could cultivate its own artists of tomorrow. The School went from one studio in donated space, to a world-class, seven-studio facility located in the Sylvan Heights neighborhood of West Nashville. The artistic caliber and reputation of the company has grown exponentially since the first season--from six dancers, to a company employing 24 full-time company dancers performing masterworks and many original, fully produced ballets. Today, NB has more than $2.5M invested in original production sets, props and costumes, the largest of which is Nashville’s Nutcracker, built in 2008. In 1996, NB created its own Community Engagement and education programs, complete with educational curriculum and interactive performances that enrich the greater Nashville area and augment the arts education that is available to children in schools. With this presence of educational, yet artistic work, alongside the season repertoire, NB stages more live performances than any other performing arts group in Nashville.
