About This Cause
By providing a voice, sharing a different perspective, bringing intrigue to the everyday, and sparking critical dialogue, art transforms perceptions and breaks down barriers. Artspace educates about the transformative power of the arts and the positive benefits that art can bring into everyday life. Since 1986, Artspace has brought value to and fulfilled the artistic needs of our community as the only arts center in North Carolina that offers visual arts education for children through professional artists, exhibition spaces for local, regional, and national artists, residencies for established and emerging state and national artists, affordable studio space for local artists, and an open studio environment where the public can engage with artists and experience the creative process first-hand. Artspace’s ability to provide opportunities for youth and adults to directly engage with artists distinguishes us from other visual arts institutions and cultural organizations in the region. We believe that by creating a connection between artists and the public, we can better educate and inform the community about the importance of the arts, help people to think creatively, and inspire future generations of artists. Each year we welcome seven to eight visiting artists in residence into our building to engage with the community, provide studio space for 30+ local artists to foster their creative growth, award over 60 need-based scholarships to students to attend art classes, and program a diverse range of exhibitions, community conversations, workshops and classes that provide meaningful ways for youth and adults to engage with art and artists. We believe in supporting the careers and development of artists of all levels. We provide time and space to work, the opportunity to engage with other artists locally and outside of the community, opportunities to exhibit, and professional development resources.
