Mission Statement
The North Carolina Reading Service connects people who are blind and print impaired to each other, their communities, and families by delivering news, information, and special programs using the latest audio technology.
About This Cause
The North Carolina Reading Service is a 40-year-old nonprofit broadcast organization that reads local and national news, periodicals, and books around the clock to an audience with blindness, low vision, or a print impairment. Our organization began as the Radio Reading Service in 1983, and eventually became the Triangle Radio Reading Service. In 2019, the organization expanded to become the North Carolina Reading Service (NCRS). In addition to reading news, NCRS also airs some locally produced content that is relevant to our audience. These shows cover topics like music, finance, and a program hosted by staff members of Disability Rights of North Carolina. We broadcast Que Pasa newspaper, a Spanish program each Saturday. Our signal can be heard through specially tuned subchannel receivers, streaming at our website, over apps like the Zeno Radio app, Zeno Radio dial-up service, and smart devices (like Amazon’s Alexa and Google Dot). Our audio signal is also featured on the house channel of several retirement communities in the Raleigh area. Our organization is run by one full-time and two part-time employees, and the broadcasts are researched, engineered, and recorded by a staff of over 130 volunteers. NCRS also partners with organizations to record their newsletters. These include the Orange County Department of Aging, the Governor Morehead School’s Alumni Association, several Lions Clubs, and the Friends of the State Library of North Carolina, just to name a few. NCRS is proud of our forty-year record of service, and we look forward to many more years of providing more companionship and a sense of community to those living with blindness, low-vision, or a print impairment.
