About This Cause
Founded in 1980, Grassroots Leadership is a nationally recognized civil and human rights organization based in Austin, Texas working for a more just society where prison profiteering, mass incarceration, deportation, and criminalization are things of the past. Grassroots Leadership strives to transform the criminal justice and immigration systems through organizing, research, advocacy, and public education; by building bridges between communities to increase the capacity of local leaders and coalitions; and by mobilizing those most impacted by incarceration and deportation. Grassroots Leadership’s efforts are largely led by individuals negatively impacted by criminalization. Through leadership trainings and advocacy campaigns led by formerly incarcerated community members, their families, and allies, Grassroots Leadership shifts public perception, advances best practices, and strategizes alternatives to profiting off the imprisonment of communities of color and the criminalization of immigration and mental health-related issues.
