About This Cause
FRIENDS OF DISABLED ADULTS AND CHILDREN (FODAC)’s mission is to enhance the health and quality of life for people of all ages who have injuries, illnesses, or physical disabilities by providing mobility and daily living aids that promote healing, independence, and assistance to caregivers. FODAC’s services can be life-changing for children born with a disability, adults dealing with the aftermath of an accident or injury, or seniors who have experienced a stroke or who are incapacitated due to an illness. Access to appropriate Home Medical Equipment (HME) can make it possible for people to continue to live at home and to stay out of institutional care. It also helps them to be more self-sufficient in performing their daily living activities, to attend school and retain employment, to access health care and to participate more fully in family, church, and community activities. Since its humble beginnings in the founder’s home garage over 37 years ago, repairing used wheelchairs and re-issuing them to people in his neighborhood who were isolated due to lack of mobility, FODAC’s mission and scope have expanded to provide additional services and assistive devices. To date, we have repaired and reissued over 60,000 wheelchairs plus tens of thousands of other items, including hospital beds, bath and toileting aids, walkers, pediatric standers and gait trainers, scooters and many more. FODAC is recognized nationally as a leading “Re-Use Best Practices” organization and is nationally certified as an accredited health care provider of HME by the Healthcare Quality Association of America. Our highly skilled staff invested over 300 staff training hours to earn this certification and FODAC is the only non-profit in Georgia with this accreditation. This milestone is a key component to our ability to partner with hospitals, other clinical facilities, and government agencies and to negotiate service contracts that will help assure our financial sustainability as well as to extending our reach to specific populations who need our services. FODAC provides over $10 million worth of refurbished home medical equipment per year to people with physical disabilities and is 4-star rated charity on Charity Navigator.
