Mission Statement

Nicholas House, Inc. (NHI) is a nonprofit agency that operates a transitional housing shelter as well as scattered apartment sites for homeless families of any composition in the Metro Atlanta area. Our mission is to help homeless families become self-sufficient by providing them with a temporary place to live while addressing the root causes of their homelessness. Last year, we assisted more than 600 homeless children and parents to achieve self-sufficiency.

About This Cause

Nicholas House is committed to assisting homeless families in attaining three goals that form the basis of self-sufficiency: 1. Earning a living wage. 2. Maintaining the physical, mental and social health of parents and children. 3. Maintaining safe and stable housing. We have served the Atlanta community since 1982, providing services that are unique to the area. Three unique features set Nicholas House programs apart: 1. Unlike some shelters, we accept families of any composition, including single mothers and fathers, couples and their children, teenage boys, and large families. Because most shelters are gender-specific, serving only women and children or only men, homelessness often separates family members from each other, oftentimes with devastating consequences. Nicholas House keeps families intact. 2. Our programs are accountability-based. Upon entering our programs, every family member, including the children, establishes an Individual Service Plan (ISP) and sets goals with their case manager. They meet with their case manager every 90 days to assess their progress toward those goals; continued progress toward their goals is required for ongoing participation in the program. 3. Our programs are outcome-oriented. We work continuously to improve the quality of our programs and produce measurable results. These attainments are measured 6, 12 and 24 months after a family leaves our programs, and the success of the program is determined by how a family is doing a year or more after they have graduated from the program. 80% of our families remain self-sufficient a year or more after leaving our programs. Our Programs We recently launched two new programs to create a continuum of four unique programs serving families experiencing different types of homelessness: 1. Boulevard Shelter – for families with no income needing immediate shelter to help stabilize the family, provide basic needs and establish a plan and goals to move forward. 2. Homeless to Homes (H2H) – an apartment-based program for families with some income but not enough to fully pay rent long-term, we obtain leases in their names as they pay 30% of their income toward rent and we provide a time-limited subsidy for the rent difference while we work to help the family increase income. 3. Home Again – one of our new programs for families with enough income to pay ongoing rent, but needing initial help, leasing advocacy or homeless prevention assistance due to temporary crisis. 4. New Horizons – one of our new programs for families with no income plus additional barriers, this permanent supportive housing program provides services to chronically homeless families with disabilities. Additional Services Nicholas House provides intensive, wraparound programmatic services to help homeless families gain the skills they need to earn a living wage, have a healthy family, and maintain safe and stable housing. Adult Education and Training Our Adult Education and Training programs help create a new future for our families by defining goals and providing the educational and training support to make dreams a reality. Twice-weekly evening courses led by volunteers that are subject matter experts offer 24 different topics to address areas such as interview skills, resume writing, budget management, debt reduction, computer use, parenting skills, stress management and other professional or life skills. Youth Programs Our Youth Services programs focus on breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness for future generations while supporting a healthy family life today. 70% of the homeless people housed by Nicholas House are children. A comprehensive Youth Services effort addresses the unique educational, emotional, social and behavioral needs of homeless children providing after-school programming, a 9-week summer camp, evening activity hours and mentoring designed for age-specific groups. The focus is on establishing educational and life-long personal skills that will create a healthy, productive and self-sufficient adult. Aftercare Nicholas House follows families for up to two years after they leave our program in order to maintain contact, assess long-term success, and ensure full transition to self-sufficiency and no unforeseen problems create a relapse to homelessness. A year or more after leaving Nicholas House programs, over 80% of families continue to earn a living wage, maintain their own housing and have a healthy family environment. The Need Nicholas House’s programs are more necessary than ever. Over 30% of Georgia’s homeless are families and there are around 1,000 homeless family members in the Metro Atlanta area on any given night. Our mission is not only to help the homeless families we serve become self-sufficient, but also to end family homelessness in Metro Atlanta.
