Mission Statement

OUR MISSION: We empower individuals and communities to create a no-kill state where the lives of all animals matter.

About This Cause

The Humane Society of Louisiana is a private animal protection charity founded in New Orleans in 1988. We are the only Louisiana agency actively working for the defense of all animals statewide. We combine hands-on animal care programs with advocacy and education. Some of our lifesaving services include cruelty investigations, disaster relief, spay/neuter and community assistance programs. We coordinate adoption transports of homeless animals from overcrowded Louisiana shelters to our private northern adoption partners. We find loving homes for horses used in parades through our annual Mardi Gras Horse Adoption program; we ensure that the animals are not sold back to brokers for slaughter after carnival season in New Orleans. We've successfully drafted and passed numerous animal protection bills, and we work to expand animal protection services statewide. In addition to our programs to aid companion animals, we aid wildlife by supporting wildlife rehabbers, operating the Merry Wood refuge and working for habitat and species protection. We educate the public about a range of animal issues, and we have educated the public about the benefits of a cruelty-free, vegan lifestyle since our founding in 1988. We own and operate the Enoch J. Donaldson Animal Sanctuary, a haven for rescued horses, in Mt. Hermon, as well as our Animal Transport Center in nearby Tylertown. We work to expand animal care and protection services statewide, from improving and assisting animal shelters to supporting and increasing the numbers of wildlife rehabilitators. Whenever there is an opportunity to help animals in need, we take action.
