Mission Statement

MAC provides emergency assistance to the working poor in 10 zip codes in Atlanta to prevent homelessness, disconnection of basic utilities and hunger during periods of temporary financial crisis.

About This Cause

In 1986, the Midtown Assistance Center was formed as a collaborative effort of midtown congregations and the Midtown Alliance. They found that by pooling their resources, they could better meet the emergency financial needs in the community. MAC is a private, non-profit organization that works cooperatively with many agencies, including United Way. Although not a United Way agency, we receive almost 2500 referrals from United Way 211 Information and Referral System each year. Clients are served without regard to religious background or affiliation. MAC provides emergency assistance to the working poor of midtown and downtown Atlanta to prevent homelessness, disconnection of utilities, and hunger during periods of temporary financial crisis. Midtown Assistance Center assists low-income families in the downtown and midtown area with rental and utility bill assistance, groceries, transportation to new employment or job interviews and work clothing. We focus on working families who have lost income due to a job layoff of cut in employment hours, and when funding permits we also assist those whose income is disability or retirement.
