About This Cause

The M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence is a nonprofit that works to realize the vision of its historic namesake by helping individuals and communities develop the inner resources and practical skills to achieve a nonviolent, sustainable, and just world. Originally founded in 1991 by Arun Gandhi, the Institute moved to Rochester in 2007, initially operating out of the Interfaith Center at the University of Rochester. Currently, it is housed on South Plymouth Avenue in a formerly abandoned building that the Institute rehabilitated with neighborhood and community support. We collaborate with local organizations, academic institutions, students and committed peacemakers in the following areas: nonviolence education, restorative and racial justice, and sustainability. We prioritize programming for people between the ages of 12-24, and for those who serve them. Our mission is to educate, embody, and serve, through the lens of nonviolence both within our staff and outward to the Rochester community through our programming.
