Mission Statement
The mission of the Hall of Fame is to serve as a catalyst and partner for ensuring the stability and strength and excellence of the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
About This Cause
In keeping its mission, the Hall of Fame seeks to foster an alliance with strategic partners to advance the missions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, increase their visibility, and create opportunities that encourage stakeholder investment and philanthropic support. This is accomplished through the many pro- grams and initiatives of the Hall of Fame: The Legacy Lecture Series The impetus of the Legacy Lecture Series is to position students for leader- ship roles in society through education and mentoring. To this end, the Legacy Lecture Series is de- signed to equip and empower students to overcome the economic, social, cultural and political challenges of today, and to re-shape the fabric of America as they step into tomorrow. The Series is presented on various HBCU campuses throughout the academic year. The Check Yourself Initiative is collaboration between the Hall of Fame, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) , and Aetna to develop, implement, and evaluate a national pilot program to address substance use at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) . The goal of this initiative is to educate, create awareness and establish a substance use disorder pro- gram that will decrease substance use among students of HBCUs by identifying risk, usage and implementing early prevention , intervention and resilience services as needed. The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony highlights and honors deserv- ing HBCU graduates for their distinguished service to their country, Alma Mater and for excelling in their field of endeavor. For more than 22 years, the Hall of Fame has celebrated inductees in the follow- ing fields: Arts & Entertainment, Athletics, Business and Industry, Community Service, Education, Faith and Theology, Government & Law, Medicine, Science and Lifetime Achievement. The Positive Image Program enlightens elementary, middle and high school students on the viability of HBCUs as an opportunity for higher learning. Education, community and business leaders mentor youth and encourage their self-esteem . College queens, kings, student government association and other organizational leaders present themselves as positive role models to the younger students. The Competition of Black College Queens showcases young African American women from HBCUs with the coveted title of "Queen" of their institution. The queens are judged in five categories. Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame serves as a national representative and advocate of HBCUs and receives an academic scholarship and prizes. The Black College Invitational Golf Tournament takes place during the annual Hall of Fame Weekend and attracts the elite Division I and Division II HBCU golf teams. The Hall of Fame awards scholarships to participating schools in support of their golf programs. The Hall of Fame Weekend Conference is the Hall of Fame's vehicle that promotes the viability of our HBCUs, while at the same time provides a forum for students, faculty and staff, and alumni to sharpen their skills and increase their capabilities through workshops, seminars, programs and institutes. The conferees' interaction with, and exposure to, the resources, talents and expertise of educators, scholars, theorists, researchers and practitioners equip and empower them to better serve their respective communities.
