About This Cause

Filling the needs of the community: DREAM POWER PROGRAMS - Women with children Sober Living Program- We help women who have a substance use disorder as well as trauma to recover and lead happy, purposeful and healthy lives. Our residential program is custom tailored to each client and lasts between 3-9 months. longer times available if needed. BOTH mother and child get the healing they need with our community support system so they are empowered and set up for a rich and rewarding life! Equine Therapy Intensive Retreats There is currently no overnight mental health re- treat centers in north Georgia or the Atlanta area to serve it’s millions of people! With an estimated 18% of the population being disabled, over 10% of the general population having substance abuse issues and over 35% having abuse and trauma is- sues significant enough to impact them psycholog- ically, the need for a comprehensive therapeutic retreat center is at a critical level. We are asked for referrals to equine retreat centers on a regular ba- sis and the 3 corporations that donate to us regu- larly would like to employ us for their executives - Home Depot, IBM & Prudential. Abuse & Trauma Program- We have programs for individuals and groups that suffered severely life altering traumatic events such as childhood or adult sexual abuse, service combat (Veterans), first responders and domestic violence or severe neglect resulting in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD). The groups consist of 3 to 5 clients meeting 2 to 3 times per week for 2 hours. This program is monitored & supervised by a licensed mental health provider that specialize in these areas & provided by a certified PEER support Specialist who has recovered from a trauma using our methods & is a PATH certified therapeutic riding instructor trained in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills. Each client will have an outside individual therapist that is seen weekly & correlates with the pro- fessional at Dream Power. This combines equine therapy with dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). This pro- gram is exclusive to Dream Power & designed by Gina Little because of the overwhelming need & her experi- ence being a survivor of childhood physical & sexual abuse as well as being a recovering alcoholic/addict for over 3 decades. The use of the horse with these clients is essential as their social structure mimics that of humans close- ly. A bond is quickly formed with the horse because of its unconditional love as it becomes the client’s closest ally in their almost miraculous healing that is far superior to traditional therapeutic methods. The results we are seeing is documented to shortening the healing of PTSD symptoms from years to a couple months in thera- py! Equine Therapy Intensive Peer Support Program- Certified Peer support programs are paid for the individuals by Department of Behavior Health & Disabilities. We have an onsite 7 day intensive retreat as well as a day programs for individuals and groups with mental health issues (substance abuse, personality & mental health disorders, anxiety & depression) due to having suffered severely life altering traumatic events. The day program group consist of 4 to 8 clients meeting 2 to 3 times per week for 2.5 hours. This program is monitored & supervised by a licensed mental health provider that specialize in these areas & provided by a certified PEER support Special- ist who has recovered from trauma using our equine therapy methods & works with a PATH certified therapeutic riding instructor. Each client will have an outside individ- ual therapist that collaborates with the professionals at Dream Power. This combines equine therapy with cognitive behavior therapy &/or DBT skills. The Peer Support intensive retreats are a 7 day program to build a strong foundation for recovery using the equine therapy groups twice per day, with nutritional education every meal and mind, body, spirit recovery groups twice daily - one group per day is a 12 Step based meeting “Double Trouble in Recovery” for those with substance abuse & mental health cooccurring. The 7 day intensives are more beneficial then a 30 day stay at a mental health hospital. Therapeutic Riding- Lessons are tailored to the individual client’s needs. All who can will start their lesson by assisting in grooming & tacking the horse. They will learn safety while building self esteem by experiencing that the horse is gentle & can be trusted so they have a comfortable frame of mind to be able to ride them. We use games such as hoops and horseshoes on horseback to develop balance, hand/eye coordination, social skills, focus, build trunk muscles and left/right brain interactions. Very basic riding skills of balance, posture & cues to horses are learned at beginners level. The horse is used as a teaching aide by learning to count their legs, then put hands on helmet to work on balance while counting to ten, learn left from right by steering the horse & learning colors & alphabet by going to the different colored cones or letters in the arena. Speech & cognitive therapy is imple- mented by the client giving the horse verbal instruction to “walk on” “go to the blue cone” or “whoa” by saying it while gently pulling back on the reins. Working on their muscles & minds will be the focus while using a sim- ple range of movements & motor functions that enhances social skills, attention & awareness. Clients graduate to the next level after they learned to use basic commands & the reins for the horse to be able to steer it through the cones in a serpentine pattern independently. Clients with physical disabilities such as downs syndrome and cerebral palsy experience themselves as capable and this raises their self esteem and confidence like no other therapy! Vocational Rehabilitation: We are the ONLY barn in the South East that has a Vocational Rehabilitation program and service agreement with the State! I can’t stress enough how this will change the therapeutic horsemanship industry and have Dream Power achieve it’s vision of providing life changing services to millions of people. We are the only provider who trains disabled people to work in the rapidly growing pet care industry and in facility mainte- nance. The most accurate reference is to look at Goodwill, which is the top provider for Vocational Rehabilita- tion in the Southeast. Their program brings in millions of dollars by providing training to otherwise unemploy- able disabled persons, and creates jobs for those people training them in their many locations. Goodwill would not be the organization it is today without their Vocational Rehab program! We are one of the few alternatives to Goodwill for Vocational Rehab and the ONLY organization providing any facilities maintenance or pet/animal industry training, which are more desired and suitable careers for most disabled persons.
