Mission Statement

Community Music School (CMS) seeks to enrich and inspire all children through music education.

About This Cause

Community Music School (CMS) believes every child should have access to affordable, high-quality music instruction. CMS is the only organization in Wake County that provides private, 1:1 personalized music instruction in multiple genres exclusively to students who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it. More than 3,000 children have received music instruction since our founding in 1994. Since our founding, weekly tuition is just $1 and all instruments are provided. The most popular instruments are piano, guitar and bass, drums and percussion, strings, brass, woodwinds, harp and voice. Students take part in 32 weeks of instruction taught by professional music faculty. CMS serves students ages 7-18 who meet the income eligibility requirements for Wake County's Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Community Music School's curriculum begins as young students take part in our Explorations I and II group classes. Explorations I consist of four 8-week modules that introduces a student to music, basic rhythms, and vocal arts. Explorations II, also 32 weeks, builds on this foundation and includes a focused semester of stringed instruments such as ukulele and violins. New for the current year, CMS is offering satellite programming of Explorations I at Southeast Raleigh Community Learning Center. This innovative new effort to connect with every young person's passion for music outside of CMS's walls, creates new possibilities for the future. Journeys, for intermediate students, see our beginner students progress to small groups that focus on a specific instrument. Destinations, our core programming, sees our young musicians engage in personalized, 1 on 1 lessons with the instrument of their choice. Many of these students display a high degree of talent and in many cases become proficient in more than one instrument while attending CMS. Explorations, Journeys and Destination lessons are all taught by our faculty of professional musicians. Through enrollment interviews, CMS matches students with the best faculty member to guide their learning. This progression of musical acumen is ultimately realized when students are prepared to perform pieces of music that are appropriate for their age and experience level during recitals and public performances. Musical Theater class, a partnership with Raleigh Little Theatre, covers fundamentals of theater performance including musical training, acting and dancing, and is open to students at all levels. Summer programming includes a week-long half-day music camp for rising 3rd-6th graders; cost is $35 for the week with lunch provided.
