Mission Statement
A Friend’s House believes that all children warrant a loving, caring and safe environment, no matter what circumstances they have encountered in life. Therefore a Friend’s House mission is to provide a home that addresses the physical and emotional needs of the children we serve in our community.
About This Cause
A Friend’s House is a home for children in crisis who are in the custody of the Department of Family and Children Services or have been referred by the Department of Juvenile Justice. In the 19 years that we have been open, we have provided services to over 2025 children. Originally, A Friend’s House was designed to serve 12 children, with the addition for 12 more children added in 2006. In the beginning, the facility was divided into a primary wing and a teen wing. Now we are divided into a boy’s wing and a girl’s wing to better serve the demographics of children who we serve. We provide the children with medical and dental care, counseling, therapy and academic and school support. A Friend’s House staff works with the children on independent living skills, and at risk activities to prepare them to handle various issues such as conflict resolution, anger management, peer pressure, substance abuse, making good choices, career education and other important life decisions. On the weekends during school & during the summer, our children are engaged in many outside activities such as sporting events, movies, plays, bowling, camps, etc. If the children are of an appropriate age, they are allowed to work to help them with their independence skills. We have a family visitation program which allows the children to maintain frequent contact with their approved (by DFCS) family members. Over 1500 people in our community have gone through our volunteer training program since opening in 1998 and we count on many of them to provide various activities and services on a regular basis such as our weekend meals, administrative help and facility beautification. We also involve college interns who provide invaluable help to our staff and invaluable on-the-job training for those college students. We expect high quality work from our staff and in turn, we do our best to provide the training, support and recognition that they deserve.
