About This Cause
The Andrew P. Stewart Center is a community development organization serving the Pittsburgh neighborhood of southwest Atlanta. The Center directs all of its resources in partnership with Pittsburgh residents in order to transform the community into a place of hope and opportunity. The Center’s programs work together to strengthen the community by empowering residents to reach their full potential. The after school program serves over 125 neighborhood children and connects the Stewart Center with over 80 families. The Center’s summer camp, youth program, resident enrichment program, wellness cooperative, and affordable housing initiative depend on the relationships forged through the after school program. The Center is the exclusive on-site after school provider at The Kindezi School at Gideons. The after school program supports students’ intellectual and emotional development. The program provides homework help/tutoring and an enrichment curriculum that includes in-depth Studios (Journalism, Computer Science, Performing Arts) that teach content, build soft skills, and produce tangible deliverables. The after school program is provided at no cost to families. Each summer, the Center hosts over 60 elementary age students for a summer-long day camp in the Pittsburgh community. Summer camp is built on experiential learning opportunities that focus on academic readiness, educational discovery, and leadership development. Campers participate in a reading program, art, music, recreation, and educational travel. The summer program builds on the curriculum utilized during after school. The youth program builds young leaders by providing middle and high school students opportunities for intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth. Students participate in leadership development sessions, service learning opportunities, and educational travel. Each year, students perform many hours of community service and travel to places such as New York City, Washington D.C., and the Grand Canyon. The program also prepares students to work as assistant counselors in the after school and summer camp programs. Currently, 4 high school students work in the after school program. The Center’s wellness cooperative provides support and builds capacity among Stewart Center families through food distribution, education, and networking. Cooperative members receive food that supplements their normal groceries at each bi-weekly meeting. The food is locally grown and organic whenever possible. The co-op also provides education on physical health, emotional wellbeing, and family leadership and parenting. Originally unplanned, the wellness cooperative has evolved into a networking resource for members, connecting families to housing, employment and other services. The Stewart Center launched Pittsburgh Community Housing (PCH) in 2015 to support families and combat blight in our neighborhood. PCH promotes personal and community transformation through strategic housing solutions. PCH reclaims vacant houses in the Pittsburgh community and provides affordable rental, rent-to-own, and purchase opportunities to families with children engaged in Stewart Center programing. Currently, the Stewart Center owns 14 single family properties – all of them have been rehabbed and are occupied by Stewart Center families. We completed rehab on our first small multi-family property in 2022, adding five units of affordable housing. We are now in the predevelopment phase of a project to build a 30+ unit affordable complex in our community. The resident enrichment program creates pathways for residents living in PCH housing to achieve greater control over their family’s future. The program helps families better manage their financial resources and obtain long-term stability through wealth creation. Residents take control over their finances and move toward homeownership by participating in quarterly financial training sessions, regularly meeting with a financial mentor, and building bonds with other residents. Although there are many obstacles to success, the Pittsburgh community has great potential and the Stewart Center is committed to supporting our neighbors as they pursue their full potential.
