Mission Statement
The mission of Dress for Success Atlanta is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
About This Cause
Dress for Success Atlanta, formerly Working Wardrobe, was founded in 1997 by Deborah Wolf. Ms. Wolf created the organization after seeing many skilled applicants come through her medical staffing agency who could not be placed in professional positions because they did not have appropriate interview attire. She enlisted friends and colleagues to help her with donations of gently worn suits and to volunteer to help clients find appropriate attire to wear for interviews. Until 1999, Dress for Success Atlanta was an all-volunteer organization and now has a President/Executive Director and staff of four. The organization has added workforce development programs that include resume building, review, and mock interviews, onsite workshops that range from personal growth topics to career building, a job retention program (Professional Women's Group), a 30-seat career center complete with computers, and a safe, supportive environment for under and unemployed women to imagine and devise a path toward achieving personal and professional goals. Dress for Success Atlanta clients are referred to us by our network of Community Partners, a continually expanding and diverse group of non-profit agencies including homeless shelters, drug treatment programs, job training programs, educational institutions and domestic violence shelters, among many other organizations. At her initial appointment, women receive career coaching, resume review, and a primer on effective interviewing. She also is fitted for two interview outfits including shoes, jewelry, and a purse filled with toiletries. After finding a job, clients may return to Dress for Success Atlanta for additional clothing and new hire guidance, so that she will not have to use her first paychecks for work clothes and can feel confident about her approach to acclimating to a new work environment. Dress for Success Atlanta relies on the financial contributions, in-kind donations, corporate partnerships, and the volunteer efforts of individuals and companies throughout the metro Atlanta area to support women in defining the direction of their lives. While we may be best known for providing suits to women, it is our workforce development programs that are the cornerstone of the organization. Soon after Dress for Success Atlanta was founded, it became clear that securing employment is only one step in a woman's journey towards economic independence. Sustaining employment is essential if a woman is to become truly empowered and self-sufficient. Dress for Success Atlanta serves 600 to 800 women each year, providing each with the resources, clothing, and individualized support that is necessary to inspire the change they seek in their lives that lead to attaining financial stability and independence.
