Mission Statement
Georgia Organics is a member-supported, non-profit organization with the mission of investing in organic farmers for the health of our communities and the land. Our vision is that all Georgia farmers nurture and heal the land, people, and communities.
About This Cause
For the past 26 years, Georgia Organics has been rooted in providing direct support to organic farmers across our state. Georgia Organics champions organic agriculture, healthy families, and environmental stewardship by prioritizing farmer prosperity as we foster improved school nutrition, and activate local food partners across the state with the goal of making local, organically-grown food accessible to all. In our new strategic plan, we have committed to prioritizing providing services to and directing resources toward Black, Indigenous and Latina/o (BIPOC) and rural farmers and food system advocates. We are working to increase organic farmer prosperity, build a network of advocates and stakeholders who champion organic farmers and an equitable food system, and invest in organic farmers and regional food systems. Our strategic plan goals are: 1. Organic Farmer Prosperity - Grow the number of organic and regenerative farmers who are profitable and earning a living wage; 2. Resilient Local Food Movement - Grow an effective network of advocates who champion organic and regenerative farmers; 3. Impact Capital - Grow investment in organic and regenerative farmers and regional food systems; 4. Strong Georgia Organics - Grow impact by centering the organization in equity, relationships, resource development, and accountability. We work toward these strategic goals through the following programs/departments: 1. Farmer Services: Our Farmer Services team provides small and organic farmers with one-on-one support, resource provision, group instruction, and deep-dive programs like our Farmer Fund Accelerator, Emergency Support, and Healthcare programs. This suite of services is designed to help these farmers build and maintain strong farm businesses and achieve farmer prosperity. 2. Farm to School works to engage more Georgians in learning about, growing, and purchasing local, healthy food by serving Georgia’s school nutrition, teaching, and early care communities. We strengthen and celebrate the impact of school nutrition in nourishing communities. 3. Farmer Champion brings local farmers and the food service community together to increase sustainable and organic purchasing. 4. Family Farm Share builds local food systems and connect farmers directly with consumers within early care and learning center communities. We accomplish this by supporting the development of a group style Community Supported Agriculture program designed to address childhood food insecurity for children ages birth to five while developing a new outlet for small scale farmers. Some key highlights from our work in 2023 include: - Investing over $384,750 directly in farmers, including providing emergency relief to 60 farmers devasted by Winter Storm Elliott. - After a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we hosted the Georgia Organics Conference & Expo in Perry, GA with 487 attendees, including 172 farmers. We also hosted over 23 educational workshops and field days throughout the year. -We successfully launched the Organic Farmer Advocacy Corps to mobilize and activate the organic farming community to lend their voices to lawmakers as we work toward a new Farm Bill that will benefit Georgia's organic agriculture community. - We launched the inaugural Climate Smart Farmer Program, a program that will prepare BIPOC farmers with the adaptation and mitigation tools that build resilience and maintain productivity in the face of climate change. - We launched the new apprenticeship program to create a pipeline for new and beginning farmers while supporting a cohort of farm hosts as they increase their business capacity. In 2023, we completed the program with 7 farm hosts and 9 apprentices. - 13 Georgia School Districts were Awarded $60,000 through our Farm to School Innovation Mini-Grant program.
