Mission Statement

Usher's New Look is a 501 c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to developing the next generation of global youth leaders. New Look provided students with a peer-peer curriculum based upon their four pillars of leadership: Talent, Education, Career, and Service. The model begins with students in the 8th grade. They are introduced to the curriculum with day long leadership training. The students then have the opportunity to apply to our four-year leadership academy for students in the 9th-12th grade. In the academy, students focus on one of the four pillars throughout the entire year. 100% of students who participate in the academy graduate from high school. 98% of them go onto college. Once in college, students enter into the Mogul-In-Training program, which prepares the students to compete in the global career market.

About This Cause

MISSION and ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW OF USHER’S NEW LOOK Usher's New Look is a 501c3 organization on a mission to develop the next generation of global youth leaders. In 1999, Usher Raymond IV established an organization to give marginalized and underserved youth a “New Look” on life. Usher’s New Look prepares young people for success and leadership through a programmatic model based on four essential pillars: talent, education, career, and service. UNL’s developmentally appropriate curriculum helps young people identify their TALENTS, learn to focus their passions through EDUCATION, gain opportunities to explore a future CAREER, and give back to their communities through SERVICE. New Look’s curriculum is predicated on the Search Institute’s building blocks, which represent the relationships, opportunities and personal qualities young people need to succeed and thrive. To date, Usher’s New Look has trained over 31,060 youth from marginalized communities providing skills and tools necessary to succeed in school, career and life. Utilizing a peer-to-peer training model, Usher’s New Look has increased high school graduation rates, post-secondary pursuits, and developed well-rounded, forward-thinking leaders. We are extremely proud that 100% of our academy high school seniors continue to graduate on time! Usher’s New Look serves over 1,500 youth per year across the nation. The Problem (Opportunity) UNL’s programs target the problems identified by underserved youth and provides training within schools that impact their academic and personal decisions. These students stand at a distinct disadvantage as they may not have resources outside their academic environment addressing these problems, leaving them unprepared to navigate the crucial years of middle school and high school as a springboard to successful life opportunities. UNL employs a proven strategy of early intervention and collaboration with these students to introduce the concepts of social, financial, and academic responsibilities that are a part of their growth toward future success. Demographics: Usher's New Look serves socio-economically disadvantaged youth who can be characterized by the following: 1. 56% of children reside in single-parent households. 2. Attend schools where the majority receive free or reduced meals. 3. Enrolled in school districts with high school graduation rates of 55-65%. Core Programs UNL’s three core programs (Powered By Service, New Look Leadership Academy and Moguls In Training) provide a progression of sequential and cumulative learning experiences to help youth transition successfully from middle school and high school to college and the workplace. Students completing UNL’s programs receive leadership certification through a process developed in collaboration with Emory University’s Goizueta Business School: Powered By Service – Local Leadership Certification (Middle School/High School) Powered By Service is UNL’s gateway program into the Academy and MIT. During the 5 to 6-hour workshop, students identify their individual “sparks” (i.e., talents, passions), articulate their “personal brand” (i.e., how they wish to be viewed by others. The students explore the root causes of local issues of concern to them (e.g., homelessness, bullying, substance abuse) and make a personal commitment to create and execute PBS projects. Over 3,500 youth in metropolitan Atlanta have received PBS certifications since 2009. New Look Leadership Academy – National Leadership Certification (High School) The intensive 4-year, 400-hour Academy, currently housed in Atlanta, Milwaukee, Detroit, N.Y, ready students for college and future careers. Students prepare for the SAT/ACT, learn how to write successful college applications, navigate the financial aid process, and make plans for college visits and interviews. Corporate sponsors and community volunteers introduce them to a variety of careers through "motivational minute" presentations and job-shadowing opportunities. Through our peer-to-peer training model, youth develops leadership skills, mentor younger students and spearhead service projects in their communities. Since 2010, over 1,000 students have participated in the Leadership Academy with 100 percent of these students graduating from high school. Moguls In Training – International Leadership Certification (Post-Secondary) Using an online curriculum supplemented by interactions with peer and adult role models, UNL’s college youth build community partnerships, engage in venture philanthropy and take courses to master the fundamentals of project management, teamwork, marketing, and sustainability. A key success of the Moguls In Training Program is having these matriculated youth to serve as traveling peer trainers who lead UNL’s national and international Powered By Service workshops and serve as mentors to younger students. Also, Moguls in Training graduate college on time and readily prepared for graduate studies or their career of choice, thanks to valuable work experience gained through summer internships and job shadowing with UNL’s corporate and community partners.
