Mission Statement

We harness the power of plants for humankind and share the joy and beauty of tropical gardening with everyone.

About This Cause

Fairchild is dedicated to harnessing the power of plants for humankind by connecting plants and people. We are one of the world's leading science education-based botanic gardens and a recognized leader in native plant conservation. We are also one of the most beautiful gardens in the world exhibiting the largest collections of tropical plants anywhere. For three years in a row, we've been named the "Best Botanical Garden in North America," by USA Today as well as "Miami's best outdoor attraction" by the Miami New Times. We are an 83 acre public garden that is home to the National Orchid Garden, The Million Orchid Project, the only tropical rainforest in the continental United States, the largest palm and cycad collection in the world, some of the rarest plants anywhere in the world, Bio-TECH, the only botany high school and elementary school in the world, the largest citizen science initiative in the world, and the only botanical garden working directly with NASA to grow edible plants in space. For more than 35 years, Fairchild has been the leader in conserving Miami's native plants. Our conservation team collaborates closely with a wide range of professionals and everyday citizens to save our region's beautiful and inspiring native plant diversity and the wildlife that depends on it. Today, our citizen science-led program known as "Connect to Protect," is a free program featuring plants native to Miami's unique ecosystem. Participating members receive a free plant starter kit and then monitor their gardens for particular pollinators and collect seeds from their plants to return them to Fairchild for seed banking or growing. The Network now includes hundreds of gardens throughout Miami, but this is still far from the goal of a Native Plant Network Garden at every school and on every block. Fairchild's conservation team firmly believes that a critical part of Miami's resilience in the face of climate change will be to increase native plantings wherever possible.
