The mission of the Urban League movement is to enable African-Americans and others in historically underserved communities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights.
About This Cause
An affiliate of the National Urban League, the nation's oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans; the Urban League of Broward County (ULBC) is dedicated to empowering communities and changing lives in the areas of Education, Entrepreneurship, Jobs, Justice, Housing, and Health. The mission of the Urban League movement is to enable African-Americans and others in historically underserved communities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power, and civil rights. Since 1975, ULBC has been a trusted voice, responsible advocate, and leader in creating pathways for stronger, economically viable, and healthier communities. ULBC offers 18 robust and impactful programs serving over 13,000 disenfranchised individuals and families annually. Our programs are designed to produce the following impacts in each programmatic area: Education: Children and youth (under age of 21) demonstrate appropriate academic performance and social-emotional intelligence. This is done through: life skills education, tutoring, ACT/SAT preparation, academic remediation, pro-social activities, behavior modification, restorative justice and community service. Entrepreneurship: Adults are positioned to create, sustain and grow small businesses. This is done through end-to-end business development services including individualized, technical assistance, small business boot camps, training and activities that ensure access to Money, Market and Management Jobs: Adults receive certification and have gainful employment. This is done through hard and soft skills training. Housing: Families are economically secure. This is done through homebuyer education, pre-purchase/ foreclosure counseling, and financial management Health: Families have healthy lifestyles. This is done by ensuring that families have access to affordable health care, maternal and infant health education, and prevention education about chronic diseases.
