Mission Statement

Hibiscus Children’s Center is currently celebrating saving children since 1985. Our mission is to maintain a safe shelter for children who are abused, abandoned, and neglected by providing prevention, residential, assessment and recovery programs. Hibiscus Children’s Center also prepares our children for their future by constructing programs so that our children acquire an education, attain emotional and physical well-being, achieve career readiness, and gain independent living skills.

About This Cause

From primary prevention to intervention, Hibiscus identifies strengths and capacity that are innate in all family systems, works in partnership to build family resiliency, and ensures children grow up free of abuse and neglect with the ability to reach their highest potential. Child abuse, neglect and abandonment are community problems … and Hibiscus understands that solutions are based on the commitment and investment of the community as a whole. Hibiscus Children’s Center is a not-for-profit agency made up of a number of programs serving abused, neglected and abandoned children. It is best known for its 36-bed emergency shelter for children – birth to twelve years of age removed from their homes due to egregious abuse and neglect. The Hibiscus Children’s Shelter, located in Jensen Beach, is a 36-bed emergency shelter for children – birth to twelve years of age who have been removed from their homes due to egregious abuse and neglect. Children receive 24-hour awake supervision, educational, medical and dental care, and most importantly psychological counseling in a safe, loving environment. The Hibiscus Children’s Village is a group home facility; a more home-like setting to help teens successfully transition to foster, adoptive homes, and independent living at age 18. The Village has six group homes, a Career Center for tutoring and a GED Lab, a Campus Center with Recreation Room, outdoor basketball court, and two pavilions for outside dining and meeting areas. The Village has many enhancements to its residential programs to meet the Florida’s foster youth including Career Pathways to Independence, volunteer tutors, Camp Hibiscus in the summer, on-site nurses and mental health therapists. The Shelter and the Village together provided over 250,000 nights of safety to children since opening the doors in 1989. Hibiscus Supporting Families in Crisis is a child abuse prevention program in St. Lucie County for families who voluntarily seek help. Staff work hand in hand with family members to access community resources including housing, day care, and mental health services, as well as a support system to prevent abuse from occurring in the family. In 2005, Hibiscus expanded its clinical services to provide Residential and Outpatient Mental Health Services to children, birth to 18 years of age, and their families through our Community Mental Health Program. Hibiscus currently has over 20 therapists serving children at the Shelter and Village, in the community, and at homes and in schools. Hibiscus Extended Foster Care/Transitional Living Program on our Village campus is a 4 bed supportive living environment for boys turning age 18 who wish to remain in care while transitioning to independence. This program will allow the youth to achieve progressive levels of independence in a supporting, nurturing environment that is familiar to them. The program includes the opportunity to receive and be engaged in, off-campus internships and/or employment; continuing education; financial literacy; health, physical and emotional support from the campus staff (including nursing, psychiatry, therapy and life skills) and various community partnerships. The Hibiscus Treasure House Thrift Shop provides resources to children and families in our program services and those in need in the community. It also provides a source of revenue for program operations. Hibiscus Volunteers and Guilds work tirelessly on behalf of the children and families we serve bringing over 33,000 hours of volunteerism each year in a variety of functions, in addition to raising dollars to meet community identified needs for our most vulnerable children and families. The Hibiscus Children’s Center Foundation was originally created in 1993 by a group of involved community leaders who wanted to ensure the long term viability of Hibiscus Children’s Center. Many who were original founders of the Center saw the need to provide long-term financial resources for the children and families in need of the treasure coast. An endowment fund has been established and fundraising goals are set annually to ensure gaps in program funding. Hibiscus is a highly valuable resource for the State of Florida in the field of child abuse, neglect and abandonment. Hibiscus actively works to remain at the forefront of best practices in child welfare through our membership in the Florida Coalition for Children, and being accredited through Council On Accreditation For Children and Family Services.
