Mission Statement
The mission of the Escambia County Healthy Start Coalition, Inc. is to improve the health of pregnant women and babies through community partnerships.
About This Cause
The Escambia County Healthy Start Coalition is one of thirty-two non-profit organizations across Florida dedicated to improving the health of pregnant women and babies. The Coalition relies on local community input to plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive system of care for pregnant women and children, up to age three, who might be at risk for a poor pregnancy or birth outcome. The Escambia County Healthy Start Coalition, Inc., is a private, non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization funded through the Florida Department of Health’s Healthy Start Initiative, local and national grants, and generous donations from committed, concerned community members. Florida’s Healthy Start was enacted by state legislation in 1991 with the goals of reducing infant mortality, reducing the number of low birth weight babies, and improving health and developmental outcomes for all Florida’s babies. Our programs include Connect: Through screenings, Connect identifies needs and links families to the programs that best serve them. This coordinated intake and referral process ensures the best fit for families and streamlines access to services. At the same time, it improves program enrollment and retention rates, reduces duplication of efforts and builds a broader early childhood system of care in Florida. Women can then be enrolled in the Healthy Start Home Visiting program where families are connected to one on one parenting support, breastfeeding education, growth and development screenings, and more. TEAM Dad: Many new fathers struggle to figure out their role when their wife or partner has a baby. Our fatherhood program offers education, training, and support to help men become the responsible, engaged, and empowered fathers their children need them to be. FIMR: The Escambia County Healthy Start Coalition is honored to serve as the local Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) team for District 1 (Escambia County, Santa Rosa County, Okaloosa County, and Walton County) in collaboration with The National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention and Florida Department of Health. FIMR strives to address the factors and issues that affect infant and fetal deaths by reviewing individual cases to understand the systemic issues in the district and then working to create interventions that address those issues. Stork Stock: Through generous donations and community partnerships, Escambia County Healthy Start has been able to supply hundreds of families in the area with free baby supplies. In accordance with our mission of supporting the health and well-being of all pregnant women and newborns, we provide free baby supplies to our most at risk families in Escambia County. This is done through our home visiting programs and a special 'North Escambia Stork Stock' closet in partnership with Century Pediatrics.
