Mission Statement
At the Speed Art Museum, we invite everyone to celebrate art forever.
About This Cause
Whether you’re an art aficionado or don’t know a Dali from a Degas, you can find fresh inspiration and meaning at the Speed Art Museum. With modern architecture, expanded programming, interactive exhibits and inviting outdoor spaces, the Speed offers countless opportunities for everyone to create their own connections and experience art at their own speed. The Speed Art Museum first opened its doors in 1927, beginning its role as an essential arts organization for Louisville and the surrounding region. As Kentucky’s oldest and largest art museum, the Speed draws visitors from throughout the state and attracts both national and international audiences. The curatorial staff currently steward a collection of over 13,000 objects that span 6,000 years of creativity. In addition to displaying its permanent collection, the Speed presents ambitious exhibitions that bring new artwork and scholarship to the Louisville community. These curatorial initiatives are enhanced through educational activities like artist talks, community events, and workshops. The Speed places a strong focus on education through school and outreach programs that reach underserved populations. School groups can visit the Museum for interactive tours and art-making, or our educators can bring Art Detectives to the classroom for hands-on investigation of artworks. Along with our dynamic school programs, the Speed partners with several community organizations each year through our outreach program Community Connections. We also offer Museum visitors opportunities for deeper engagement with the collection through daily tours and Art Sparks, our interactive gallery for all ages.
