Mission Statement

The Caney Creek Community Center, Inc. was established in 1917 to provide basic social services, healthcare, and education for children and young people from the area. Our founder and co-founder established over 100 elementary schools throughout the mountains and founded Caney Junior College in 1923 (the College was renamed in honor of our founder at her death in 1962 and made its transition to senior college status in 1982). Alice Lloyd College is a private, fully accredited, four-year, non-denominational, co-educational, liberal arts college, operating on Christian principles. The College also operates a K-12 college preparatory school (The June Buchanan School) on the ALC campus.

About This Cause

Alice Lloyd College's mission is to educate mountain students, regardless of their financial ability, and prepare them for leadership and service in one of the most impoverished regions in the nation. No qualifying student has ever been turned away for lack of financial ability to pay. In addition to its four-year program, Alice Lloyd College operates a Child Development Center and a private K-12 college preparatory school (The June Buchanan School) on campus, and also provides financial assistance through our Caney Scholars Program to many of our alumni who seek advanced studies at graduate and professional schools (we are assisting 45 students through the Program this year). Alice Lloyd College is the only four-year liberal arts college in the nation actively recruiting students exclusively from Appalachia. It is also one of only seven work colleges in America requiring all full-time students to work as a condition for enrollment. Ninety-five percent of our graduates applying at graduate and professional schools get accepted. Eighty-three percent of our graduates return to the area to lead and serve. Seventy-four percent of all Central Appalachian counties classified as economically distressed in the Appalachian Regional Commission’s (ARC) 2013 report are located within our service area. The College guarantees no out-of-pocket costs for tuition to all qualifying full-time students from 108 Appalachian counties (includes parts of KY, OH, TN, VA, and WV). The College focuses on low-income and first-generation students; so the majority of our students come from low-income families. This year, 59% of our incoming freshmen qualified for PELL Grants, and 26% reported family incomes below $3,000. Our region has lost thousands of jobs due to the decline in the coal industry, which was the major source of income for those who live here. The percentage of working age adults who have jobs is below 30%. Our region is struggling for economic survival. We have added new majors to our curriculum this year to help meet the needs of our students. We constructed a Center for Entrepreneurship and Collaborative Learning and have expanded our business program to include majors in entrepreneurship and management, marketing, leadership, accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, health care administration, e-Commerce, and management information systems. Our new Center will provide aspiring and current entrepreneurs vital resources, so they can create jobs for others in the region.
