About This Cause

Lexington Hearing & Speech Center is a private, 501(c) (3) nonprofit agency with more than 55 years’ experience working with children with hearing, speech or language impairments. Our mission is to teach children with hearing, speech and language impairments to listen and talk. We do this by providing high quality educational, clinical and family support services. LHSC has been Central Kentucky’s leader in oral deaf education for preschool children since its founding in 1960 as the Lexington Deaf Oral School. Jimmy and Edie Frankel founded LHSC as a preschool for children with hearing loss, creating an educational alternative to the state residential school for the deaf. In 1978, programming was expanded to include additional audiological and speech/language pathology services for preschoolers and community clients. While LHSC began as a resource for children with hearing loss, today, the curriculum and outpatient services benefit all ages. The name was officially changed to Lexington Hearing & Speech Center in 1978 to better reflect the diversity of the programs offered. In 1993, day care services for younger children were established, creating the Early Learning Center. In 2011, we to the 70,000-square-foot brick school on Henry Clay Boulevard (formerly J.R. Ewan Elementary School). This facility has supported our continued growth and expansion within all programs. LHSC has evolved into a quality healthcare provider for persons of all ages, providing educational, hearing, and speech services in 2017 to over 1,200 individuals from over 65 counties across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. LHSC advocates early identification and intervention to encourage development of audition, speech and language. LHSC’s goal is for children and adults to leave LHSC with the language and independence to be active participants in their community and that no one is defined by their communication delay. Focus of LHSC programming falls within three areas: the Audiology Clinic, the Speech/Language Pathology Clinic, and the education programs of the Early Learning Center. The triad of care offered by LHSC for children with hearing loss is one of its kind in the state of Kentucky, and one of only a few free-standing non-profit organizations in the country providing similar services.
