Mission Statement
The North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence leads the state’s movement to end domestic violence. We envision a North Carolina where all communities are empowered to eliminate domestic violence and all vulnerable people, including the LGBTQ community and immigrants, regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, can find safety. We seek a North Carolina where all communities are empowered to eliminate domestic violence and all vulnerable people, including the LGBTQ community and immigrants, regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, can find safety and the resources to thrive.
About This Cause
The North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCCADV) is a statewide member and advocacy agency. Across the state, 86 community-based agencies serve domestic violence survivors in all 100 counties. Most of these agencies are NCCADV members and collectively they provide direct services to the many thousands of people (and their children) who seek relief from domestic violence. As the Coalition leader, we encourage and support our member agencies with training, capacity development, and other services. In addition, NCCADV is the only organization in North Carolina that works at the state level to systemically eliminate domestic violence. We seek transformative change by eliminating institutional, cultural, and individual oppressions that contribute to domestic violence. This includes working to: • advance public policy related to domestic violence • build a strong legal environment for preventing abuse and stopping perpetrators • frame and address domestic violence as a public health and child safety issue • foster healthy societal and community systems that can prevent family violence • ensure equal protection from abuse for all people, including the LGBTQ community Domestic violence affects approximately 1.9 million people in NC. Most victims are women, and a smaller percent are men. Violence occurs in same-sex, hetero, and dating relationships. The state’s community-based agencies answer more than 100,000 hot line calls each year. In 2015 they provided direct services to 56,664 individuals and their children. This is part of a national problem. NCCADV works with state and national agencies, organizations, partners and government entities to raise awareness about the issue of domestic violence and about ways to address the issue. We envision a North Carolina where all communities are empowered to prevent and eliminate domestic violence and every domestic violence victim has access to safety and the resources for well-being.
