About This Cause
Since 2008, ArtBridge has empowered local artists to transform dilapidated urban spaces. In particular, ArtBridge specializes in turning the blight of construction sites into vibrant art exhibitions. New York City faces a construction epidemic, with its five boroughs currently immersed in 320 miles of street-level construction fencing. This absurd amount of scaffolding eats away at the vibrancy of our city. Why not instead use it as a canvas to promote one of New York City's greatest assets — its thousands of talented artists? In so doing, ArtBridge is able to turn a communal liability into a collective asset. Local artists receive unprecedented attention for their work, and residents are exposed to vibrant and provocative contemporary art in place of urban dilapidation. Furthermore, ArtBridge activates its exhibition sites with placemaking activities such as artist-guided tours, and arts events and instruction for local youth. The result: Artists do not merely beautify their neighborhoods, they are empowered to be community builders. ArtBridge also frequently partners with local organizations for each exhibition, in order to ensure that its exhibitions derive from and exist for the benefit of the local community.
