About This Cause
The Sertoma Club of Nashville is part of a national civic organization that’s been around for 100 years and in Nashville for 75. Sertoma is an acronym for SERvice TO MAnkind. We are a 501© (3) organization with a primary charitable focus on speech and hearing health. Yearly we provide over $80,000 in qualified financial support for the efforts of a number of other nonprofit organizations and school programs. In some cases, that support involves the time and energies of our members, e.g., our annual “Fantasy Baseball Camp” held at the Nashville Sounds stadium where several professional ball players get to teach a group of deaf/hard of hearing kids about the game. In other cases, our support is with funding for worthy projects or equipment needs in local schools, health-related facilities and nonprofit agencies(e.g. Bridges, Big Brothers of Nashville, Big Brothers& Big Sisters, YMCA, etc.) In the club’s early years, we built the first Girl Scout Camp in Middle Tennessee, Camp Woodhaven. Additionally, this club is also unique in that it provides $12,000 each year in academic scholarships to high school seniors through our “Williams-Patton Freedom Essay” contest and third year audiology students. In 2011 we developed a new organization called HEAR Nashville. It was a result of a collaboration between our club, Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Speech and Hearing Center, Department of Audiology at TSU, Bridges and the Nashville Chapter of Hearing Loss Association of America. Our intent is to provide hearing aids for qualified low-income people throughout Middle Tennessee. Our 50+ club members represent a wide variety of businesses and professions. All are committed to civic involvement in the community and helping Nashville to be a place where people want to live.
