Mission Statement

MIFA supports the independence of vulnerable seniors and families in crisis through high-impact programs. Our vision is to unite the community through service.

About This Cause

MIFA (Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association) was founded in 1968 in an unprecedented cooperative effort uniting church and community leaders to confront the growing issues of poverty, hunger, and social division in Memphis. Created in the wake of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, MIFA began as a volunteer-driven advocacy agency and has since evolved into a broad-based, professional, social service nonprofit with a focused mission: MIFA supports the independence of vulnerable seniors and families in crisis through high-impact programs. Those programs serve people of all ages and races in Memphis and Shelby County. MIFA's senior programs promote independence, health, companionship, and dignity. Home-delivered meals (Meals on Wheels), free transportation to medical appointments and meal sites (Transit), and companionship (Senior Companion) allow our clients to remain in their homes, while advocacy (Long-Term Care Ombudsman) supports them in facilities. MIFA's family programs prevent homelessness, stabilize families, and encourage independence. We offer financial assistance with rent, mortgage, and utility payments (Emergency Services); connect clients with emergency shelter (Emergency Shelter Placement) and stable housing (Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Rehousing); and an opportunity for teens to reach higher education (College Offers Opportunities for Life).
