About This Cause

Emerald Youth Foundation is an urban youth and community development ministry headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee. It was incorporated in 1991 to provide outreach to children and youth in Knoxville’s inner city and today provides outreach to more than 2,000 children, teens, and young adults in economically disadvantaged communities each year. The curriculum and programs of Emerald Youth Foundation focus on four strategic pillars of youth development: learning, health, relationships, and faith. Emerald Youth Foundation endeavors to help young people graduate with the skills needed for college, career, and life; reduce risky behaviors and develop healthy habits; be better connected with friends, family, and other adults living inside and outside their neighborhoods; and become involved in a faith community as well as provide service to others. Three programs are designed to achieve these goals: • JustLead—A community-based ministry model which provides after-school, summer, and mentoring experiences to children ages 5 through young adult. • Emerald Youth Sports—In partnership with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, this program mobilizes athletes to become leaders, gives athletes fun, skills, and competitive sport opportunities, and equips coaches to teach sport and life skills. • Emerald Youth Fellows—A program to help young adults complete post-secondary education or training and develop the skills and knowledge to become leaders in Knoxville’s urban communities. Emerald Youth Foundation serves young people ranging from elementary-age through young adult (up to age 25) living in the inner-city, formerly defined as Knoxville’s Empowerment Zone, as well as those living in the first ring, suburban neighborhoods. In 2014, Emerald Youth Foundation served over 1,800 youth with the following demographics: 51% African American, 31% Caucasian, 7.5% Hispanic, 10.5% mixed race/other. We do not collect data on the income-level of our participants, but know that the majority are attending schools which report free-and reduced-price lunch rates in the 80-90% range. U.S. Census data indicates that the average household income in our target area is slightly over $25,000, and the poverty rate is above 38%.
