Mission Statement

Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens promotes public knowledge and appreciation of plants, gardens and the environment and receives, raises and administers resources for these purposes. We achieve this through free science field trips to 10,000 children annually, growing and donating more than 3,000 pounds of food a year for local food banks, planting thousands of trees in storm damaged areas, and protecting rare and endangered endemic plants.

About This Cause

Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a partnership between the City of Birmingham and Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, an organization of 2,700 family and individual members who support The Gardens. Through funding and advocacy, The Friends further restoration, preservation and development of The Gardens as a resource for everyone in the community. The Friends promote knowledge and appreciation of plants and the environment with educational offerings to over 350,000 visitors annually. Happily, admission to the Gardens continues to be free to all visitors. The Friends thus must seek additional funding sources to sustain its mission. With your help, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens will continue to expand educational programming, environmental awareness, facilities maintenance and development as well as horticultural health and diversity. Our Gardens constitute a valuable resource for our community which must be maintained and enhanced for present and future visitors. Education is our Mission. Through programs and classes targeted at everyone from school age children to seniors, Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens strives to further educate people about plants and the environment. Discovery Field Trips is our free, hands-on, science-based field trips designed for preschool through high school students. These educational experiences are totally free including reimbursing transportation expenses. Plant Adventures offers an evolving framework to explore the significance of people-plant interaction in promoting human well-being and the health of the planet. One role of Birmingham Botanical Gardens is to facilitate such interaction in this unique urban plant space and in outreach to the community. We also offer weekend programming for families and adult education programs like our Certificate in Native Plant Studies courses. We look for education opportunities everywhere, like our Centennial Tree Program. From 2009-2014 and with our community partners, The Gardens planted over 1,500 native trees on 15 sites in the Birmingham area, regenerating the urban forest that has been damaged or lost due to natural aging, storms and development. Two-year survival rates for these trees, planted at schools, in parks like Red Mountain and George Ward Parks, and in natural areas like the eroding banks of Shades Creek and the Cahaba River, has averaged an impressive 80%. Enough seeds have already been collected to plant thousands of new, sustainable native trees in the next several years, but we need your support. Funds are needed to offset costs for personnel; materials including collection bags, labels, nursery containers, trays and growing media; and for other public programs that promote environmental awareness and stewardship.
