About This Cause

Food Bank of North Alabama Programs: * Feeding Friends and Neighbors in Need: We supply 7 million pounds of food to 229 charitable feeding programs reaching an estimated 100,000 residents in need. www.foodbanknorthal.org * Backpack Programs: We partner with companies, churches and civic groups to provide two-day meal kits to children who go without food over the weekend when they do not have access to the free meals served at school. These meal kits mean children arrive to school Monday mornings ready to learn without the distraction of hunger. http://fbofna.org/Closing%20the%20Gap.aspx or www.closehungergap.org * Disaster Response: We are a first-responder in times of disaster providing emergency supplies of food and water. * Fresh Food Initiative: We help families access fresh foods from local farmers by promoting the use of SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) at farmers markets. For every SNAP dollar spent at a participating farmers market, we double the value up to $20. It’s a win for families trying to eat healthy on a limited budget, a win for local farmers and a win for the local economy. Partners include Greene Street Market at Nativity, Farmers’ Market at Latham United Methodist, Terry Heights Farmers Market, and Bailey Cove Farmers’ Market at St. Thomas. http://fbofna.org/~/media/ALHuntsville146/Files/Farmers%20Markets%20Final%20 2014.ashx * North Alabama Farm Food Collaborative: We help family farmers sell local food to local schools, hospitals, workplace cafeterias and grocery stores. The program supports thriving family farms, strengthens our local economy, and makes fresh, healthy foods available to the broadest spectrum of residents. Partners include the Alabama Department of Agriculture, Alabama Cooperative Extension, local farmers, local buyers and more. http://fbofna.org/Farm%20Food%20Team.aspx * The Hiatt Loan Fund: Provides micro-loans to family farmers and entrepreneurs who create jobs and greater access to healthy food choices in underserved communities. Loans have helped expand food truck businesses, healthy corner stores, local restaurants, and more. The fund is operated by our partner nonprofit, Neighborhood Concepts. http://fbofna.org/Hiatt%20Loan%20Fund.aspx * North Alabama Food Policy Council: Fosters education, collaboration and policy advancements to support a more locally-based, sustainable and self-reliant food system accessible to all. The Council is a grassroots, all-volunteer effort open to all residents interested supporting local food and farmers. www.nafoodpolicycouncil.org or nafoodpol@gmail.com or https://www.facebook.com/pages/Food-Policy-Council-North-Alabama/250295231677404
