Mission Statement
To champion and strengthen the global response to child abuse.
About This Cause
In 1985, U.S. Congressman Robert E. "Bud" Cramer, then District Attorney, saw the need to create an efficient community system for protecting abused and neglected children in Madison County. The result was the opening of the National Children's Advocacy Center (NCAC). Since its opening, the NCAC has aided in the establishment of more than 900 other Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) in communities nationwide and throughout the world. These programs have revolutionized our nation’s response to child abuse, serving more than 275,000 children in 2012 alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the lifetime cost to our nation for each case of confirmed child abuse is more than $210,000. Thus, this is more than just an issue of responding to child abuse. It is an issue affecting our nation’s health and economy. In 2004, the dream of creating an entire campus dedicated to the protection of children became a reality, and Congressman Cramer was instrumental in the construction of our state-of-the art facility. The entire campus currently operates on Pratt Avenue to provide safety, justice, and hope for victims of abuse and their families. The primary goal of the NCAC is to effectively coordinate the multidisciplinary response to cases of child abuse and neglect in Madison County. The Multidisciplinary Team is co-located on our campus and works collaboratively to investigate and intervene in these cases from the initial report to the final prosecution and completion of evidence-based therapeutic services to help children and their caregivers heal. The NCAC model and multidisciplinary team was created to address these issues and make child abuse investigations more child-friendly and collaborative while also providing children and their families with support. The multidisciplinary team, often referred to as MDT, consists of representatives from the Madison County District Attorney’s Office, Huntsville Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Madison City Police Department, Crisis Service of North Alabama and Madison County Department of Human Resources. Many of these professionals s are co-located on the NCAC campus. Working as a team, they support one another and develop strong lines of communication to address the needs of children from the initial investigation through final prosecution (if necessary). The NCAC also believes that prevention is essential to ending cycles of abuse and neglect. SCAN (Stop Child Abuse and Neglect) is a personal safety program for children in grades 3, 5 and 7 in all Madison County, Madison City and Huntsville City schools. Other programs, such as Healthy Families, reach first time or at-risk parents and provide them with necessary tools to raise healthy children and ensure that the family has a strong, positive bond. Additionally, the NCAC educates professionals from a diversity of fields about effective ways to respond to and prevent child abuse. The NCAC National Training Center hosts the annual National Symposium on Child Abuse in Huntsville that educates professionals from all over the country, and also hosts the annual Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Prevention Conference and weekly trainings approximately 25 weeks out of every year. These activities contribute significantly to the Huntsville/Madison County economy as the NCAC has trained more than 70,000 professionals in the United States and more than twenty countries since 1985.
