Mission Statement
BAO was incorporated in 1985 and was the first nonprofit dedicated to providing HIV/AIDS prevention, education and services for persons living with HIV/AIDS in AL. The mission of Birmingham AIDS Outreach (BAO) is to enhance the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS, at-risk, affected individuals, and the LGBTQ community through outreach, age-appropriate prevention education, and supportive services.
About This Cause
BAO programs include: HIV programs: food bank/nutritional supplements/food vouchers; legal services; clothes and household items closet; transportation; medication assistance; medical items; GED classes; personal hygiene supplies; case management; pet food; pet spay/neuter program; retention in medical care projects; counseling and support groups; women’s sewing group. HIV Education programs: HIV 101 presentations; HIV/ STD/STI testing; PrEP outreach and referral; Couples Testing/Counseling; Youth Advisory Council; education in local schools; Sidewalk Film Festival educational commercials; community outreach. Magic City Acceptance Center, a youth LGBTQ center; book club; Legal Clinic; art classes; talent shows; counseling; resource center; drop-in hours; computer lab; movie nights; health and wellness workshops; Family Matters, a photography exhibition of LGBTQ youth that premiered at The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and has been shown at Art Basel, The Southern Poverty Law Center, Stonewall Museum and one photograph is currently displayed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery; HIV/STD/STI testing and education; skill building classes; clothing swap nights. In January 2016, BAO opened the Magic City Wellness Center, a LGBTQ medical facility providing: general medicine; a PrEP clinic; HRT; free counseling and support groups; substance addiction support group; trans support group (under 14) and a support group for parents of trans youth under 14; STD/STI/HIV testing and treatment; STD/STI free clinic; Birmingham ALIES, LGBTQ over 50 group and activities. BAO is the lead/fiscal agency for 3 community education/advocacy projects: Magic City Acceptance Project – a collaboration of non-profit agencies aimed at increasing services and advocacy for youth; Alabama Bound -a new movie documentary based upon the photography exhibit Living in Limbo; B-Heard Needs Assessment in collaboration with The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. In fall 2021, BAO will open the Magic City Acceptance Academy, an LGBTQ affirming public charter school in the Birmingham, AL metro area implementing trauma informed care and project-based learning for students in grades 6-12.
