Mission Statement

The Amazon Center for Environmental Education (ACEER) Foundation accelerates Amazon Rainforest conservation by empowering people and communities.

About This Cause

The Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research (ACEER) was founded in 1991. Our mission is to develop local and global environmental leaders who work to conserve and restore functioning landscapes in the Amazon Basin and beyond. ACEER has been a dynamic force for rainforest conservation for over 33 years. We pioneered scientific applications of canopy walkway systems in the Amazon; scientists have discovered new plant and animal species at ACEER-supported facilities, and new medicines have been discovered at our ethnobotanical gardens. Today we continue to offer transformational experiential learning opportunities to a local and global audience, impacting more than a million people worldwide. Our programs include, but are not limited to: Local Experiential Learning Our local experiential learning programs take place in Puerto Maldonado, Peru. They integrate environmental education in the classroom with out-of-school and community programs. ACEER supports over 1,000 students and 120 teachers annually, allowing them access to new pathways and exploration for further professional development and careers. Conservation Leaders Program The ACEER Conservation Leaders Program is an annual cohort-based leadership program of emerging conservationists from around the world focused on conservation in the Amazon. Leaders receive individual mentoring in the unique areas that are most helpful for their development. The Leaders program includes an experiential component in the Amazon that functions as a capstone experience, where the cohort lives in the Amazon alongside ACEER staff and affiliates and our Indigenous Ese’Eja and Maijuna Maijuna partners, and applies their learning to real conservation challenges. Artist-in-Residence Program Artists play an integral leadership role in the Conservation Leaders Program, helping bridge the gap between art and science in the Peruvian Amazon. The program is an international collaboration between NGOs, artists, and scientists, primarily implemented through a three-week residency at the Camino Verde Reforestation Centre, coordinated by ACEER. Participants engage in in-depth lectures and workshops led by local Indigenous artisans and leaders, alongside specialists in Western scientific fields. A highlight of the program is the opportunity for artists to join scientists in the Conservation Leaders program, enhancing the experience of collaboration by merging creative and scientific perspectives.
