Mission Statement
The Joy to Life Foundation has a simple mission: provide free mammograms and other breast cancer screenings when necessary to medically underserved women and men in Alabama, provide limited grants when needed, build and support breast cancer awareness among all Alabamians, and promote over-all health, well-being, and education throughout the state.
About This Cause
There are thousands of people in Alabama who do not have health insurance. They simply cannot afford it. In some cases, especially with men, they have insurance, however, breast services are not covered. It is for this reason the Joy to Life Foundation continues to work each and every day to help reach these women and men to provide access to the screenings they need and deserve because we know early detection is saving lives. Through partnership with the Department of Public Health’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, JTL is able to fund screenings of women between 40 and 49 years of age. For women under 40, Joy to Life independently provides funding and is the only organization in Alabama serving men of any age. For the past several years JTL has seen a trend of more potential cancers being identified in younger women and men and less in the 40+age group. Working with a multitude of medical professionals throughout the state, Joy to Life has been able to provide direct pay services that include mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies and physician consults. This partnership has been able to help women in their teens, 20’s and 30’s, along with men from 19 to 90 years of age. We are now screening more women of all ages than ever before. Since their beginning in 2001, Joy to Life has grown from serving 3 Alabama counties to serving 28 counties in 2008; and now, the foundation is saving lives in all 67 counties in Alabama and has provided over 98,000 mammograms to date.
