Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide humane shelter for homeless and lost cats and dogs, provide affordable spay/neuter and healthy pet services, encourage adoptions and educate the community about responsible pet ownership.
About This Cause
Southern Pines has completely transformed over the last decade with a focus on community relationships, reducing barriers to adoption, and embracing new and innovative programs to increase lifesaving dramatically within our organization. Just 10 years ago, Southern Pines was taking in almost 12,000 pets each year and euthanizing almost 80% of those pets entering the shelter. Through a complete rebuilding of our programs and lifesaving philosophies, today Southern Pines saves the lives of every healthy and treatable pet entering our shelter. In 2009, Southern Pines opened a low-cost spay & neuter clinic which has today completed more than 70,000 surgeries in our local communities. The Southern Pines Healthy Pet Clinic serves as a community resource providing low-cost veterinary services to our surrounding communities and shelter pets. Upon realizing that we had reached a sustainable lifesaving rate within our shelter, we began to look outward into communities with shelters and rescues still facing challenges in finding lifesaving outcomes for pets. Originally, these partnerships were born through our EmBark transport program as we began taking on source partners. Southern Pines took on a hub role, and our transport numbers grew from 1,500 per year to more than 4,000 pets transferred from overburdened southern shelters to new homes across the nation. Additionally, Southern Pines works to bring partner groups together to talk about successes, challenges, and lifesaving opportunities; and our organization has taken on a mentorship role for under-resourced shelters looking to improve lifesaving programs and operations.
