Mission Statement
To provide free healthcare services to the underserved population of South Florida regardless of their Ethnicity, National Origin, Sexual Orientation or Religious and Political Affiliation.
About This Cause
Established in 2008, UHI CommunityCare Clinic, a nonprofit organization servicing low income community of South Florida. Mission of the clinic is “to provide free healthcare services to the underserved population of South Florida regardless of their ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation or religious and political affiliation.” provides free primary and specialty health care to low-income, uninsured residents of South Florida. UHI, located in Miami Gardens, is a nonprofit, volunteer-based clinic dedicated to helping those in need of necessary health care services but either cannot afford or do not have health insurance, by providing access to free health care, education, training, and medical services. Through its volunteers and partners, we deliver a wide range of non-emergency healthcare services to 40-50 uninsured or under-insured patients every day. Without UHI’s help, these undeserved members of our community would turn to emergency rooms for non-emergency care, at a high cost to themselves and the healthcare system. There is great need for primary health care in low-income neighborhoods in Miami-Dade County, particularly in District 1 neighborhood, which is ethnically diverse. Many of the Haitian, Asian and Spanish community members are reluctant to seek care, due to transportation, inability to take time from work and other personal issues. Majority of these members are low-income populations who are more affected by chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and stress. Having a free clinic which provides essential services like primary care, pediatric and other preventative services lowers the stress on emergency rooms in public hospitals. Though UHI does not offer urgent care or emergency care services, it helps prevent patients visiting emergency rooms. Funding for UHI is provided by the local community, private donors, and grants. UHI relies heavily on volunteer doctors and students of Medical and Nursing schools of Florida International University. The students of FIU get an opportunity to work with experienced doctors and also get a chance to serve the local community. UHI clinic is the only free clinic in Miami-Dade County providing Optometry services along with free eye glasses to patients in need. In conjunction with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, we provide yearly check up to detect early Retina Degeneration to our diabetic patients. The clinic partners with Florida international University's Herbert Wertheim Medical School as their teaching facility for Medical as well as Nursing students.
