Mission Statement
Prioritizing children's mental health in our families, schools, and communities through prevention, education, and treatment.
About This Cause
Tykes & Teens has been a leading provider of the highest quality evidence-based mental health services and programs for children and adolescents for more than 24 years. The agency began offering services in 1996 in Martin County with the goal of strengthening local families by ensuring that all children have access to high-quality counseling and mental health services, regardless of financial status. Since then, we have expanded services to St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. Our passion and commitment is to empowering children and adolescents by developing innovative and unduplicated programs, and collaborating with community partners. We are accredited by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, licensed by the Florida Department of Children and Families, and meets or exceeds all federal, state, county, and local laws and regulations. We accept most insurance, private payments, and we are a Medicaid-approved provider. We have successfully administered a sliding fee scale for those in need when necessary for more than 20 years. Call us at (772) 220-3439 and one of our intake specialists will review insurance coverage and determine eligibility for the sliding scale. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency, we also provide $750,000 in unreimbursed services to the communities we serve each year. At Tykes & Teens, we believe that we cannot wait for another tragedy to happen – locally or nationally – to make affordable, accessible and high-quality mental health awareness and services a priority. We believe mental health matters every day. Our services build a healthier and more resilient community by helping children improve self-esteem; recover from sexual abuse, domestic violence and substance abuse; improve anxiety and depression symptoms; and develop the valuable skills they need to live a healthy and independent life. We also advocate for increased awareness of mental health to remove the stigma and shame often associated with seeking mental health treatment. Since our inception, Tykes & Teens has provided affordable quality mental health services for more than 60,000 children in need across the Treasure Coast. In addition to offering services virtually via HIPAA-compliant telehealth, we provide services from over 50 in-person service locations, including outpatient offices in Palm City, Jensen Beach, Hobe Sound, Port St. Lucie and Vero Beach; childcare centers; Martin, Okeechobee and Indian River County schools; in collaboration with community partners; and in more than 200 homes. Tykes & Teens’ full range of general mental health services and programming for children and families includes individual, family and group therapy and counseling, as well as a wide range of specialized prevention services, and in-school and community-based programming that helps children and families cope with a full spectrum of issues such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, bullying, school suspension, substance use and abuse, suicide and more. Our prevention services program administers a youth alcohol prevention curriculum in Martin and Okeechobee schools, and has provided more than 500 community events for adolescents and parents to prevent substance use, bullying, dating violence, suicide and other dangerous behaviors among youth. We also have a youth group in Martin County trained to recognize problems among their peers and address those problems. Our community-based services include Infant Mental Health in more than 200 homes for children ages 0 – 6 and their families. Tykes & Teens sets a standard of quality as the only nonprofit agency on the Treasure Coast offering Infant Mental Health and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. This intensive intervention is proven especially effective for those who self-harm or are suicidal. Our Little Tykes Infant Mental Health, Trauma-Informed Care and TRUST (Teaching Resilience and Understanding Symptoms of Trauma) Programs create system change in childcare centers and schools by offering training and onsite support to teachers and caregivers. Our wraparound Targeted Case Management (TCM) services help clients and families build new natural support systems so that families can maintain progress following the completion of services. Group services include Sexual Abuse Family Education (SAFE); Youth Enrichment Services (YES); Parents Group; Dialectical Behavioral Therapy group; and S.T.A.R.S. (Strengthening Teens in Acquiring Resiliency for Success) Program. Our Alternative to Out of School Suspension (ALTOSS) program in Martin and Indian River counties provides a safe, structured and supervised educational environment. Our Healthy Families Indian River County is an accredited home visiting program for expectant parents and parents of newborns three months and younger experiencing stressful life situations.
