Mission Statement

The mission of SHELTER, Inc. is to prevent and end homelessness for low-income, homeless, and disadvantaged families and individuals by providing housing, services, support, and resources that lead to self-sufficiency.

About This Cause

Founded in 1986, SHELTER, Inc. operates programs that seek to prevent and end homelessness for low-income people in Contra Costa, Solano, and Sacramento counties. Our programs provide housing, services, support, and resources that lead to self-sufficiency. Last year, we provided intensive services to more than 2,600 people. SHELTER, Inc. uses evidence-based best practices to serve the complex needs of homeless families and individuals, providing a variety of service models to meet people where they are. Our emergency shelter programs provide shelter and supportive services to help homeless people get back on their feet and safely housed. For people who are homeless but capable of being leaseholders, our rapid rehousing programs provide time-limited financial assistance and housing navigation services to help them find a permanent home. And for people who are at risk of becoming homeless, our prevention program provides one-time financial support to help our clients get past a crisis. Our employment services program addresses one of the main causes of homelessness: financial insecurity. Intersecting with all of our programs, our employment services program assists our participants with job readiness services, access to community resources and other supports to help them increase income and become self-sufficient and able to sustain permanent housing.
