BERGIN UNIVERSITY OF CANINE STUDIES

Penngrove, California, 94951 United States

Mission Statement

Our mission is to advance the human-canine partnership through education, thereby addressing the global need for more service dogs trained using positive methods and placed with people with disabilities. Students earning their degrees at Bergin University learn how they can start their own service dog organizations while training dogs that will be placed with our clients.

About This Cause

During the mid 1970s, Bonnie Bergin began exploring the idea of partnering canines with humans to aid with basic life tasks, and her notion eventually revolutionized life for those with disabilities worldwide. Today, many Americans with disabilities are able to maintain independence and integrate into the everyday world with the help of their loyal, four-legged companions. Founded in 1991 by Dr. Bonnie Bergin, Bergin University of Canine Studies is the world’s only university accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools to provide Associate, Bachelor and Masters degrees in canine studies while placing high-quality assistance dogs trained through only positive methods. In keeping with Dr. Bergin’s original mission to help more people, the university provides assistance dogs to people with physical disabilities at a low cost and to Veterans with physical and/or combat-related disabilities at no cost. Since the founding of the university, over 460 students have earned their degrees or participated in our summer seminar, and staff has placed over 220 assistance dogs with people with mobility challenges and veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.
