Mission Statement

The mission of the Coastal Watershed Council (CWC) is to preserve and protect coastal watersheds through community stewardship, education and monitoring.

About This Cause

Rivers impact communities. The San Lorenzo River and the park that lines its banks, the Santa Cruz Riverwalk, could be a natural respite, a popular alternative transportation corridor and a gathering space in the heart of Santa Cruz’s urban downtown and in the center of low-income riverside neighborhoods. Despite their potential, the San Lorenzo River and Santa Cruz Riverwalk today suffer from neglect. Santa Cruzans don't think to visit, or worse yet actively avoid the public space because of its negative reputation spanning from pollution control to public safety concerns. When Santa Cruzans avoid the river, we become disconnected from it, which keeps us from understanding how we both rely on and impact the San Lorenzo River in our daily lives. Well-visited Riverwalks and public parks across the United States have revitalized urban communities by introducing new economic opportunities, decreasing crime, improving public health and increasing positive sentiments about the environment. The Coastal Watershed Council is the leading change agent in Santa Cruz realizing the community’s vision of a healthy, welcoming and fun San Lorenzo River that connects our diverse community to nature that is recognized as an attractive and desirable location for outdoor recreation. We’re doing that by bringing people to the river through family-friendly and youth-focused events that include art, history, music, water quality monitoring, habitat restoration and community engagement. Downtown is right next to the San Lorenzo River and CWC is committed to ensuring that housing and mixed-use developments near the riverfront downtown benefit all aspects of our community. This effort includes learning about and employing placemaking concepts and following principles of parks related anti-displacement (PRAD). Invest in CWC as an evolving and not-so-common environmental nonprofit shaping this river and Riverwalk for the benefit of our entire community and the three million visitors that come to our city annually.
