About This Cause

Waking the Village was founded and is led by two teachers who launched the nonprofit in 1999 with a 2,300 mile bike trip across America to teach 17 youth in crisis the power of dreams and determination. The youth, ages 11 to 21, overcame homelessness, depression, and addiction to cycle from California to Florida. Centered on the same approach of intensive mentoring and leadership training, WTV opened Tubman House in January 2003, serving four young parents and their children. Six months later, WTV opened a second house, and has been serving eight families at a time ever since. Timeline of Waking the Village's Programs: - 2003: Tubman opens two houses. - 2005: WTV added on-site childcare. - 2008: WTV secured funding to acquire its sites. - 2009: WTV launched Art Beast Children's Studio, a cottage industry that generates funds for Tubman, provides jobs to Tubman residents, and offers free memberships to former residents. Art Beast provides a dynamic environment for all Sacramento's children. - 2016: WTV launched three new programs: The Creation District, The Doorway, and Audre's Emporium of New Tomorrows. The Creation District is an incubator and a safe haven for creation, discovery, activism, daring, and dream-making for Sacramento's youth and young adults. Based out of Wind Youth Services' brand new drop-in center in downtown Sacramento, the Creation District offers a continuum of creative workshops that bring together young people from all different walks of life to tackle the work of building a brighter and braver future. The Doorway, a partnership with Wind, offers up to two years of housing and support in 12 apartments for homeless youth that are pregnant and parenting. Based on the Tubman model, the Doorway offers intensive coaching and program engagement in a more independent setting. Audre's Emporium of New Tomorrows offers two shared housing sites for LGBTQ youth and young adults that are overcoming homelessness and are survivors of crime. One site serves families and the other serves individuals. Both sites follow the Tubman model of intensive services and community building. 2017: WTV launched Art Beast Child Development Center, a licensed preschool providing high quality care to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary students. The center is licensed to serve up to 75 children. 2018: WTV lauched Youth Prevention and Intervention team, colocating with community partnerships to move upstream in addressing crises and homelessness for youth. 2018: Muck and Wonder Farm School, a licensed preschool, expands WTV's offerings of licensed early childhood care programs 2019: Youth Employment Program: WTV launches an in-house employment program that places youth in paid internships to develop job skills and explore careers. 2021: The Village, a shelter serving young parents and their children. 2023: 24 bed transitional to rapid rehousing program launched serving youth and children. 2024: Street Leaders, a youth-led street outreach program, launched. Since 2003, Waking the Village has offered over a thousand youth and children housing and wraparound care. WTV partners with each resident to pursue housing, jobs, and progress toward careers. Staff provide support between 8:00am and 4:00pm as residents study, attend classes, work, join WTV's leadership and parenting sessions, address legal concerns, or meet with a coach. In the evenings, house directors provide guidance in managing each home and building community. A staff doula provides prenatal counseling and labor coaching. Residents save 75% of income as a commitment to self-sufficiency. Our support to the children begins in the womb, as staff connect mothers to responsive doctors, prenatal nutrition, and stress management to reduce the impact of maternal stress. Parenting workshops support parent and child in building a strong attachment. The children attend a free, on-site child development program from 9:00am to 4:00pm. The children's program includes art, song, nature play, a language rich environment that includes Spanish and English, and activities to nurture emotional and cognitive development. Since January 2003, 90% of Tubman's clients exit to stable housing, 95% exit connected to medical care, 76% attend college, averaging 12 units prior to exit, 88% access mental health counseling, 50% work and attend college, and 75% clear all debts. All commit six hours a week to leadership through service learning and governance of Tubman.
