Mission Statement
The Petaluma Phoenix Center, known to most simply as the Phoenix Theater, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in support of local youth. The mission of the Petaluma Phoenix Theater is to foster the emotional, physical and social development of the young people we serve, specifically at risk youth, by enabling them to create and engage in programs for music, the arts, and health and wellness, while preserving and improving the historic Phoenix Theater as a resource for youth and the community at large.
About This Cause
The Phoenix Theater is a youth driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in downtown Petaluma that seeks to: • Provide a safe environment for youth programs, activities and services • Encourage youth participation in music, art and performing arts; and • Renovate, maintain and preserve the theater building as a venue for youth activities and the community at large Originally built in 1905 as an Opera house, the theater has supported its surrounding community, and especially youth, for generations. Tom Gaffey, the manager since 1983, grew up in the theater and continues to ensure that The Phoenix is a safe place for youth to spend unstructured time with their peers around responsible adults who understand, respect, and support them. The theater gained 501(c)3 status in 2002. With its primary income coming from live music shows, the theater is much more than a live music venue. As we look ahead, 2014 looks to be an exciting year as the theater is starting to see many new faces, the free teen health clinic is going strong, and the demand for our free music classes continues to grow. Several of the sound engineers and stage hands we have been mentoring joined the local union this year. Most importantly, the theater still functions as a place where youth can come in and hang out, talk with their peers, foster positive relationships, and feel a sense of community and belonging.
